Yes, I know it’s the long way around, but I haven’t been able to narrow down the list of officers - I have an heirloom that originated with the 78th during the 1830s but no record of who it belonged to. All I’ve been able to find out is that it would have been an officer, but the Army Lists don’t have a Gray in the regiment during that time so I’m down to hoping I might stumble across a family connection instead. Any clues would be much appreciated. Thanks to all of you for the avalanche of info so far!

Re General Gray, the will and the problem with dates for Major Charles Gray's death - I can't get to the original documents, but from your summaries I wonder if "General Gray" was one of the brothers and not Charles? Perhaps Charles wasn't made a trustee because he was on overseas service when the father died? That way we have Major Charles dying in India in 1826 and General unnamed brother dying in 1857.

Apart from all that, can I ask a couple more questions? Could someone please tell me the names of Major Charles' brothers-in-law, male cousins and nephews? I'm trying to find a family connection to someone (not named Gray) who was an officer in the 78th Highland Regiment during the 1830s. Once I have some names, I can compare them with the Army Lists. Thanks.

Your information about Charles John GRAY -
"...he then disappeared (before 1913, the year his daughter / my grandmother married)..."

What do you see for 1913 to be  relevant to Charles John GRAY having left left home?

Argus 26 Jul 1934 p1
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/10976205?
GRAY. - On the 24th July, 1034. at her daughter's residence, 46 Charles street. Kew, Hester Rosetta, wife of Charles John GRAY, beloved sister or Ethel Orme SLACK, dearly loved mother of
Winifred (Mrs. T. HENRY), Margaret (Mrs. T. SPILLANE, and Sidney M. GRAY -(Private Interment.)

Hester is not described as a widow.......Charles John is not......"the late".

Do you have the death certificate for Hester Rosetta GRAY, died 1934?

My grandmother was Margaret and the marriage announcement in the paper in 1915 (sorry, 1913 was a typo) described her as the "youngest daughter of Mrs. C.J. Gray" - no mention of Charles at all, either dead or alive. I've always understood that he was gone rather than dead. I don't have Hester's death certificate yet, but I'm working on it.

Re the will, is there any indication why it was in the Scottish jurisdiction rather than English?

Wow, I need to process all this, especially after getting nowhere while I was looking in Scotland! Thanks!

Sounds very promising - my grandmother's brother was Sydney Macfarlane Husband Gray!

Thanks! I've managed to get hold of my grandmother's birth certificate, which has Charles John at 35 years old (1890-35=c1855) and says he was born in Redruth, England - which was a surprise to me! His father was also Charles John, so the family story about coming from Forfarshire must have applied to him.

By 1890 they were in Australia, where the younger children were born, but he then disappeared (before 1913, the year his daughter / my grandmother married) - I was hoping the grave would answer the mystery by proving that he went back to Scotland.
