Lanarkshire / Re: James Main/ Helen Frew, Old Monkland

Came across this while trying to dig into my maternal line more. I'm a descendant of James & Helen through their daughter, Isabella. Like you, I've also came across the trees with the information on James Main who is a tailor so this has been a massive help. Thank you for this. Do you have any info on James Main's parents?

Thanks!

The Common Room / Re: Anyone found much use in the Brit. Newspaper Archive sub?

I’ve made great use out of it for once of my ancestors who was a footballer. I found so many match reports for the years he played, to the point he is probably my most “”complete”” with regards to finding out their movements on an almost weekly-basis!

Otherwise I’ve found it useful more in looking up advertisements and events that happened in local areas, or news stories that my ancestors would have known about in order to get a better idea of what was happening around that time.

Ha! Nice find. It looks like “corner” to me also.

Hi Knight-Sunderland

I like your term 'locked doors' and the whole more positive attitude it conveys, rather than 'brick walls'.  I shall try to think of mine in that way from now on - thank you.

By the way, I don't think anyone should feel guilty for using the term.

Cheers,
Melbell

This is how I’m going to think of mine as well! I started doing my family tree in my early teens and definitely fell into the trap of thinking “I’ve hit a brick wall, okay, I guess I can’t go further” and put it completely out of mind. It’s only now as I’m redoing my tree to make up for young!me’s mistakes (oh me of the past, you should have listened to teachers more! cite your sources!) that I’m trying to have a more positive attitude towards it. I accept there might be some things I’ll never have the answer to, but that won’t stop me from giving it a good try!

Yep, looks like The Light Infantry to me as well. :)

I may need my eyes checked (along with my Dad who thought of it in the first place!) but could it potentially be something to do with music?

We reckon the bottom part of the pin on the tie looks shaped almost like a horn as it's more curved than what you'd see on the Freemasons symbol, which tends to be more of a V shape.

Although, now I'm second guessing myself.  :P

Also add in a yes from me. Facial features look exact to me, particularly size of ears etc.

It's possible it could be a 'Common Ground' grave or 'Paupers Grave' where it's shared with people they're not related too. Can't be certain though as have only just found out about them for myself today.  :-X
