Good idea about making notes, Ruskie - I'm terrible at that, and I spend too much time asking myself 'How do I know that ?'  :-[

I should take my own advice.  ;) (I do take notes but usually on dozens, no hundreds, of tiny pieces of paper, which I eventually throw into a folder)

I think this offer is still on ...  Ancestral Scotland http://www.ancestralscotland.com/ will give you some free credits to use on Scotland's People if you sign up to their newsletter. (details on the panel on the rigght on the above link)

You will need to register with Scotland's People in order to use the credits. You can also ask friends or relatives to sign up to Ancestral Scotland and ask them to pass their credits (which come in the form of a voucher code) onto you.  ;)

Thanks very much for that, I'll take a look!!

Thank-you all for all your suggestions and advice  :)

I spoke to my Mum on Skype yesterday, she told me where and when she married my Dad and gave me her parents' full names but couldn't tell me where or when they were born. She knows her Mum was born in Rutherglen in Scotland, but nothing more than that.

So...I'm off the starting block and have a few details at least  :)

Can anyone advise me now whether it's worth applying for my parents marriage certificate or what I should do next?

Of course I also plan to contact my aunts who may know a bit more and I'll also Skype my Dad to get as much from him as I can.

Just so excited to finally be started!!!

Hi everyone! I've decided to start tracing my family tree and looking at all the information I'm fairly overwhelmed by it all!!

Planning to start by asking my parents about their parents...I don't think either of my parents have a copy of their birth certificates or their marriage certificate...they are hopeless when it comes to stuff like that!! They live outside the UK now as they emigrated 7 years ago.

Can I apply for birth certificates on their behalf? Or, after talking to them where should I start?
