Hi Sparrett, Thanks for contribution.  Found a quote from the 1960s the other day which said 'we have to stop cutting down trees and denuding the forest - the only answer is to wrap in the newly popular plastic'.  How things have changed!!!!!

thanks judb, We had a thermos later on but initially it was a billy and loose leaf tea.  I am surprised to see how many complaints made it to the paper about the cost of buying boiling water.  Some shop keepers/ kiosks must have made a good profit at this time.  Thanks for contributing

Thanks cupoflife,  what a collection of interesting articles. Thank you.  It appears that the cost of buying hot water for your tea in those days was often complained about as being too expensive. It varied from place to place but I have not found anywhere that it was offered for free (except your own home perhaps!!!).   Thanks for the great reply

thanks maddy52,  Maybe it was Dinks, but when I read the article it just didn't seem to fit with my memory.  I will have to re-read it.  Maybe I will find someone who remembers seeing the same man sometime in the future.  thank again

Can anyone remember taking their billy on picnics and getting boiling water to make tea whilst out and about?  Did the shop keepers give this for free or did you have to pay for it?  For how long did this custom continue?  Appreciate any memories

Thanks Shanreagh but I don't remember my man being a leader of group - just a man in an ordinary suit and tossing his mace.  I don't think he was there to guide the march or give instructions.  Thanks for assistance

Hi Shanreagh, Thanks for reply.  The man I remember was not leading a march in any way - he was just amongst the men marching.  The question I am trying to verify is 'did this man claim that if he dropped the mace that he would lay down on the road and let the others in the parade march over him?  No doubt he must have had some experience with the mace in a band etc. but I don't think he was in this role when I used to see him.  He was one of the people we 'looked out for' in the march each year.  You would think there is some photo or film footage that included him as lots of people looked to see him each year.
