Technical Help / Re: Can't start any program from my Desktop

Looks like a problem with Internet Explorer.  restoring to an earlier point should solve it or you could re-install Internet Explorer or an alternative browser.

Unplugging the broadband, and indeed unplugging the computer should not cause a problem.  The broadband/internet settings are stored on the router so when it's plugged back in should just take a few minutes to reconnect.

When you say that you can't run a "programme" from the desktop I assume you are referring to shortcuts to URL's?  Are you double-clicking them to open them?  What happens if you click with the right mouse button and select Open?  Do other shortcuts work eg Recycle Bin?

If it is only the URL's what happens if you create new ones?  Do the new ones work?  You may have to simply recreate the URL shortcuts you have.

Sorry for all the questions but it will help identify what the problem might be!

Also do you know what version of Windows you are running?

Thanks both for the info.

I've tried various sites with no joy - PRONI is likely the best option but I take it a visit will be necessary.  Thanks Elwyn for the list of likely church records to look for - I'm not familiar with Belfast at all so that's useful!

Antrim / Samuel Houston Marriage - McCoy/M'Corry/McCloy?
« on: Monday 17 March 14 15:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I'm looking for a marriage for Samuel Houston to, I believe, Margaret McCoy.

I have nothing to go on for Samuel, but Margaret is on the 1901 census in Belfast, widowed and aged 64.  Living with son Joseph and his family.  They are Roman Catholic.

Joseph (and twin brother Samuel) were born on the 9th January 1866 in St Patrick's district of Belfast and it is from this record I have his father as Samuel and Margaret's maiden name of McCoy.  It it is noted on the record that father Samuel is a protestant.

This is where I get unstuck as I can't find a marriage for Samuel Houston and Margaret McCoy. I'm not even sure whether it would be a religious or civil ceremony, but looking at online Civil Registration Index shows a possible entry for marriage of Samuel Houston to Margaret M'Corry in 1867.  Could this be mine and there's a transcription error in one of the records?  If it is though then surely the birth record for Joseph would state that he was illegitimate given this is a year after his birth?  Also I've actually no guarantee that Samuel married Margaret there are three other possible names on the index page so I assume I would need to apply for the certificate to find out?

In an attempt to clarify whether Margaret's surname is McCoy or M'Corry I have searched for her birth, given that she is 64 in 1901.  It states on the census she is born in Antrim  The closest entry I can find is for a Margaret McCloy born 2nd November 1836 in Rosemary Street Church, Belfast.  I've checked and this is a Presbyterian church so I don't think this could be my Margaret.

If anyone can suggest my next move, or if anyone else has information on any of these, it would be most welcome!

Argyllshire / Re: McKinnon of Colonsay
« on: Friday 07 February 14 15:56 GMT (UK)  »
Susan,

sorry for not replying sooner just noticed this post!! :-[

Anyway, I don't think there's any connection - my Gibsons are not actually from Colonsay, they are an Ayrshire family.  Isabella was born a McKinnon on Colonsay and married James Gibson in Ayrshire after leaving the island.  My James Gibson is definitely an Ayrshire man.

Good luck finding your James's parents though.   :)

Just a thought actually re your search - have you looked at records for Jura?  I seem to recall from my Colonsay research that the minister from Jura was responsible for Colonsay and ony went several times a year and updated the records when he got back to Jura resulting in various errors - maybe even adding entries in the wrong book!

Scotland / Re: Who's the father?

Andy, no address of informant, but John's father is William Gibson, a baker, and he died when John was a boy.  Stepdad is Alexander so not him either.

I had actually started tracing the clockmaker family, that was my costly mistake I referred to previously  ;D.  Never found any link to my Gibsons who are a family of Bakers (John's generation were the first that weren't due to their father dying so young.  They followed the stepdads profession.)

I think I have to assume it's a mistake.  Just wanted to be sure I had the right father for Isabella as I've some discrepancies when I go down that route.  I'll start a new thread for that on the relevant board!

Yes Kay it's all I can think of - just trying to be sure before I go too far down this line, I've already spent quite a few credits on Scotland's People tracking the wrong family before I realised I'd made a stupid error reading misreading a document!

Just seems weird writing father instead of husband!  ???

I have a death from 1891, Isabella Gibson from Beith, Ayrshire.  However I'm a little confused.  In the name of father and mother column it states the father is Donald MacKinnon, Farm Servant (deceased) and mother Margaret MacKinnon m.s. McMillan (deceased).

Straightforward - but in the signature of informant it states John Gibson, father, present.

Now her husband is John Gibson - has he simply made a mistake and written "father"?
