Cork / Re: Connolly/Collins of Ballydehob & Skibbereen

Hi Brodan,
They are both extremely common surnames in SW Cork.  If your ancestors came from the Skibbereen/Scull area they might be related.  When did Mary emigrate and where from?

The Common Room / Divorce Petition wording 1887
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 17:11 BST (UK)  »
Question about the wording on a divorce petition

My GG grandparents were married in London in 1876.  They already had a son born around 18 months earlier - on his birth certificate both parents are named - although the mother uses her maiden name.  The marriage appears to take place when GG Grandmother was pregnant with her second child.

In 1887 my GG grandfather petitioned for divorce on the grounds of GG Grandmothers adultery (London  - High Court of Justice).  In the petition it is said that they have one son "as issue of the marriage".

My question is this - is this normal wording to mean that one son was born in lawful wedlock and the other ignored because he was not - or could it indicate that the elder son was in fact not GG grandfather's son.

Thanks!

South Africa / Re: Clough family - South Africa

Thank you.  I am aware of the Grevilles as my GG was Brooke's daughter.   As I recall our last Greville ancestor to be Earl of Warwick died about 300 years ago.  I have several thousand direct ancestors in my family tree - mainly from those connections but am trying to sweep up the more obscure ones.

I am interested in EB who appears to be step son of a Beer Seller from Salford, which must have been one of the most awful places on Earth in the mid 19th century.  Also in his Mum who seems a real character! The mother and son combination are absolutely intriguing.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: How do you trace a catholic priest?

Thanks for your time and help.
Found out from another website which refers to the burials of catholic priests in that area, that he was born in Enzie in 1755 (according to his grave). Here is the link if anyone is interested:

Also found an excellent site which gives family trees for some older families in Port Gordon- lots of Reids but not sure how/if they relate to mine:

Also found a Catholic Family History Society:

Family History Beginners Board / How do you trace a catholic priest?
« on: Sunday 04 June 06 19:11 BST (UK)  »
Does the Catholic church keep permanent records of it's priests?
I have hit a dead end with one particular line (Reid), but have found that my ancestor's uncle was a catholic priest in Kempcairn, Banffshire, Scotland (congregation is now St Thomas's Church, Keith), from 1783 until his death in 1825.  His name was Reverend William Reid.  I have found his will on Scotland's People but it does not add to the information I already have from other sources.   I wondered whether there might be any clerical records which give a clue to his family or geographical origins etc.  I do not know if he actually came from Scotland.

Thank you so much for the information it seems likely this is the family, Charlotte and Priscilla were popular names in earlier generations of my family.  I was unaware of the books as I live in England; my husband is a librarian, he may be able to track copies down.  I thought this branch would be almost impossible to track down because Clough is a common name and I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!

Looking for any connections to James Callaghan (or O'Callaghan) and Catherine Taylor.  Born c1820s.  They lived in Crookstown. Their daughter Johanna, born 1845, is my ancestor, she later emigrated to Australia.

Cork / Connolly/Collins of Ballydehob & Skibbereen
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 14:13 GMT (UK)  »
Timothy Connolly married Catherine Collins 1828 at Ballydehob.  There was a family farm nearby at Shronagree but the family may have moved to Skibbereen.  Children were Daniel (1828); Jeremiah (1831); Mary (1833); John (1836); Dennis (1838); Timothy (1841); Patrick (1844).  Dennis (my ancestor) and Timothy emigrated to Australia but I have no idea what happened to the rest of the family.  Would love to hear from anyone researching those families in that area.

I have a Catherine Taylor who was probably born c1820 and lived at Crookstown, Co Cork, was married to a James Callaghan or O'Callaghan.  At least one daughter Johanna born in 1845 who emigrated to Queensland.
