The 1891 census when he is married to my great-grandfather gave his pob as Whitechapel.

Suz - yob is about 1840, one of my cousins has researched Mary aka Maria too and has the same yob.

Alma Tomlin was born to single mother Mary in Whitechapel. He is in the 1861 census as a "nursechild" with a family in Hemel Hempstead. I can trace his history but can find nothing further of his mother and what happened to her.

Thanks for this info. It does look like Sarah Atack/Spolton was John Reed's first wife. I'm currently searching for more info on Spolton. Then plan to do more on the Lambs.

John Reed married Martha Render in 1844 and he was listed as a widower. I can find no trace of his first wife. I believe he was married in Leeds, probably Leeds St Peters.
He was born 14 January 1800 in Leeds.
