The Lighter Side / Re: Occupation of Boat Ranger

Grateful thanks ShaunJ - that is a new site to me. I couldn't find it on the old occupation sites I've used previously.

After closing down last night I thought about checking Newspapers for job adverts actually, as years ago - I accidentally came across an advert for 'Scavengers' in a mid 19c advert and discovered it was a bone-fide job for the local Council. That came as a big surprise.

Thank you for your help and for advising me of that particular website.

Oh gosh! Well found.

This particular man I am talking about, was a Ranger in 1921 (and before) - but in 1921 he was specific about his area ie, the places. There was about an 8 mile one way trip between these 2 places.

I can't imagine him just doing one backwards and forwards walk each day - but who knows!
That's why I thought he would sail up and down several times daily, but just don't know.

It's not really important, I was just curious. Thank you though for looking - much appreciated.

Hello Everyone -- has anyone ever come across the occupation of 'Boat Ranger' - or 'Canal Bank Ranger' please?

This particular man was seemingly a Boat Ranger/Canal Bank Ranger on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal - I imagine that he may have sailed up and down a section of the canal, looking out for boats in trouble or something like that - but I don't know. I've never heard of this job before.

Thank you Maddy -- what a really useful site the Tennessee one is - for anyone with ancestors from that State. All sorts of legal snippets about people.

Erato -- the article regarding female soldiers serving in the American Civil War, as males, is just amazing. Thank You. Every day is a school day!!

Unusual BumbleB -- but I wonder when - way, way back - and who, decided which names would be male and which, female. I have never thought of that before.

BumbleB, thank you so much for the link to that very interesting background to 'Gentleman Jack' (really Anne Lister).

Oh my goodness Gan Yam - never heard of that case - thank you also.

(I wonder if there are any known cases of this happening the other way round - ie males disguising themselves as females?) I am not aware of any.

Great memory, Zefiro - well done!

I used to love Blackadder - but don't remember that part. (Mind you I don't remember a lot of things these days!)

That's hilarious, susieroe -- just imagine if it transpires that this baby was related to an ancestor of yours!

Sadly I don't think we'll ever know. It has crossed my mind that there may just be something in the Poor Law records for Hull. One day I might check.

I am wondering what happened if the child was baptised! What would the mother's name be? As you say Treetotal - such a pity there isn't a surname.
