« on: Sunday 26 November 23 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening All.  Hope this is ok to post.  I was wondering if anyone knows when Ancestry.co.uk might next be advertising offers for their subscriptions (I am interested in the All Access option).  Many thanks!

Meath / Re: McCann's / Gibney's of "Eastmeath" / Meath
« on: Friday 04 July 14 11:17 BST (UK)  »
Finally found an old map online that shows "Eastmeath" as all of present day Meath !!  Not sure what year they changed it to just Meath but that means my McCann's could have lived anywhere in Meath during the early to mid 1800's. These McCann's had ties to the Gibney's also of "Eastmeath" -- John McCann born 1828 -- Thomas Gibney born 1827.  Anyone have ties to these families or info ??
  Thanks -- Pat

That is fantastic news for your IrishLoft, I have not posted here in many years but hope to get back into my own family history soon.

There is a pub named the Huntsman in Gormanston, County Meath - Gormanston would be 'east' Meath i.e. near the coast.  Here is a link to there facebook page:  https://en-gb.facebook.com/gibneysgormanston.huntsman - the front of the pub says 'Jack Gibney' .. might be worth checking out the history of this pub and who owned/owns it.  You never know.

Ireland / Re: Source for Newspapers in late 1970s - Dublin

I have found Irish News Archive very effective for finding obituaries for my tree. I haven't tried Irish Times but I would assume there is more chance of finding something on Irish News Archive as it covers multiple papers, and I think it's cheaper. Try doing some searches before you buy, you can't see the full article but it will show you a little snippet which might help the decision.

Thanks
Chris

Thank you Chris - appreciate the advice.

These are the two main online resources for digitised Irish newspapers - both cost money unfortunately:

http://www.irishnewsarchive.com
http://www.irishtimes.com/search

British Newspaper Archive has some Irish newspapers too but that is mostly pre-1900.

Chris

Thank you very much for those links Chris, I'll have to make sure I have a long free slot before I subsribe to make sure I can make best use of the subscription :)

I am wondering which one would be best for me to subscribe to first?

Thanks again.

Ireland / Source for Newspapers in late 1970s - Dublin
« on: Thursday 03 October 13 20:50 BST (UK)  »
It has been a long time since I started my family history and after a long break, I'm very rusty!

Could anyone please advise me where I could start looking please.  I am looking for a possible death by car accident that happened in Dublin City in the late 1970's.  I am told the accident took place close to Trinity College - on the dame street towards the Olympia Theatre.

Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Monaghan / Re: Drumacoon School, Newbliss - anyone go there?
« on: Saturday 26 April 08 19:19 BST (UK)  »
My mother went to Drumacoon School near Newbliss. She would have been there during the 1920s until her parents died. I have at least one old photographs of children at the school. You are right about the school now being a private residence. I have photographs of the school before and after it was converted. I would be happy to share these with you if this is what you are looking for. I will be visiting Ireland in a few weeks and hope to visit Newbliss and the surrounding area myself.

Regards, Angela

Hello Angela

Thank you so much for replying.

I would be very very grateful if you could email me the photos if possible... we dont' have any pictures of the old school (when it was a school)... or any other pictures you may have...

My father went to the school from approx. 1944 to 1953... His surname was Donnelly - he was living in Killeevan at the time with his uncle James Matthews.  James Matthews brothers were Michael and Peter and they would have gone to the school in the 1920s also.  My father can remember Brogans, Clerkins, Duffys and Heffernans...

Thank you Angela.... I will pm you my email address for the photos.  Every best wish to you for a safe trip to Ireland and an enjoyable stay.  Kind regards, Karen
