What an interesting thread!  Have you looked at the London Gazette?  I know it's a long way from Pontefract but if you enter Charles Poskitt in the "with the exact phrase" box of advanced search a bankruptcy notice comes up which might be of interest to you.

Do you know whether your Poskitts were woollen drapers?

Heather  :)

p.s. I also searched for the birth of Sarah Ellen Whittington on FreeBMD from Mar 1879 to Dec 1881 without success but a phonetic search of surnames turns up

Sarah Ellen Whittingham born Pontefract March quarter of 1879 - could this be the poor girl involved?

Hi Heather

I don't think my Poskitts were woollen drapers, I did a search, the Charles Poskitt who was a woollen draper was born in 1833, married an Ann Jewitt, I think anyway.

They're probably related somehow though I reckon!

I'm still confused at who this Charles William Poskitt person is, I can't find any children for Charles and Ann, I thought that it may be them who had the Charles William that hurt this little girl.

As for that girl, it could well be. She was six when it happened, that would make her 7 by that birth date, but It's still a possibility!

... I'm ashamed!

Cousin TeaUrn found a distant relative who was sentenced to death for allegedly preferring the company of animals, putting it politely.

The jokes I've had to endure....
 :o ::) ;) ;D

Haha! That's so funny! Lets hope those 'funny' genes have been filtered out over the years  :o ;) :P

Interesting. I'm not sure if this relates to the same Poskitt family as mine, I know Charles William had 4 daughters, so it's not likely to be that side, however he had brothers that could be related to that business. I might investigate!

It sounds horrific and shows that there's nothing new about some of today's high profile cases.

I know :( I was shocked when I read it. What a nasty little boy this person was. If it wasn't my relation, I wonder what became of him, and if it WAS my relation... I'm ashamed!

This is my thinking also Mike, if I had found him in a work house or somewhere in 1891 then I'd be sure it's the same person. But this has filled me with doubt.

Also, i looked some more on the newspaper website and found this:

EXTRAORDINARY ASSAULT BY A LITTLE BOY. - At the West Riding Police Court, Pontefract, on Saturday, Charles William Poskitt, elevens years of age, son of Charles Poskitt, collier, Castleford was charged on warrant with an aggravated assault on Sarah Ellen Whittington, aged six, the daughter of Richard Whittington, collier, on September 17th. The prisoner threw the poor little girl down a stone heap and nipped such pieces from her body as to cause very dangerous illness and which still keeps her confined to her room. The prisoner was remanded till Wednesday to the workhouse for medical and other evidence.

My Charles William Poskitt's father was William Poskitt, not Charles... Another indication this might not be the same kid... Except I can't seem to find another Charles William Poskitt (b1875) with a father called Charles anywhere?!

Cheers for that! Never thought to look for a different surname. Ooops!

I'd love to know if this is my Charles William though. What are the odds of there being two Charles William Poskitts aged 11 in Castleford at the same time?

Whilst looking to see if there were any records for my ancestors on the british newspaper archive... I came across an entry which I think is my 2nd Great Grandfather...

Monday 22 November 1886 - Shocking depravity at Castleford - On Saturday, Charles William Poskitt, 11 years of age of Castleford, was charged at Pontefract with mutilating a little girl named Whittington, on the 17th Sept. The girl still remains unable to walk, she hd to be carried into court. The particulars were of a most re-volting nature. The boy was remanded until Wednesday.

The Charles William Poskitt I have on my family tree was born Oct/Nov/Dec 1875 in Glasshoughton... Which would tie in with the age and location.

How would I find out if this was my Charles William Poskitt? I'd love to know what happened to this case and what happened to him as my Charles William Poskitt married aged 19 in 1894, but I can't find him on the 1891 census...

I received the marriage certificate and Richard is Joseph's father! So him living back with Richard and Mary in 1871 is the correct person... either that or their's another Joseph with a father called Richard!

As a double check, were the occupations as recorded on the marriage cert the same or similar to those recorded on the censuses for Joseph and Richard?

As for finding out what Joseph's mental health/injury issues were, you may find something in the Gale Newspaper Archive (probably free through your local library service) or the British Newspaper Archive (pay to view, but the free search facility can be quite illuminating).  If Joseph behaved oddly, he may have got a mention in the newspaper.  The chance of finding proper medical notes is about zero, I'd say.

When you get your time machine, please can you let me know?   ;D

Joseph's dad does, Richard... It says he's a labourer and that matches the census entries... Hannah's dad Ralph though... I'm not entirely sure what it says! The marriage cert scan that they've given me is very dark and the only letters I can make out are "Pat" I'll have to have a look at an occupation list for possible matches, failing that see if someone can decipher it! I've not looked at Hannah's side of the family much though so I'll see if I can find the census entries for him!

Thank you for the tips on his possible mental illness. His mark as an Imbecile could've even come as a result of Hannah leaving him! (oh the speculation about this marriage is rife in my head  :P) But it could also have been a contributing factor to Hannah leaving him, either way, he definitely isn't dead before she re-marries, so something must've happened for him to go back home and for her to take the children with him.

Don't worry about the time machine, as soon as I've found one, you guys on here will be the first to know and use it  ;D
