I would hope someone else would point out my tree mistakes if/when they found them. I'm fallible and although I'm careful to always check Ancestry hints, I do make typo's on occasion.

Sidney Arthur Dilley Died 17 Jul 1918. He was in The Royal Fusiliers.
WWI Pension Record Cards and Ledgers
His mother's name is given as Alice Maud Dilley.

So that narrows the number of Sidney Dilley's living in Islington after WW1

James Dilley b 13.4.1920 died Dec 1984 Bromley Kent so he retained the surname Dilley.  No probate entry found

I'm going to order a death certificate. I would like to know who registered his death. If he ever married it would be useful to know whose name was given as his father on the marriage certificate.

There is no birth registration for him that I can find so I assume he was registered under his mother's surname - whatever that it.

There is a newspaper snippet - January 1913 Islington Gazette

Sidney Dilley, 20 yrs charged with stealing from his employer.

This does not surprise me. Several members of the Dilley family had a criminal record.
I don't suppose the snippet gives Sid's address?

It looks as if Sidney's only brother who survived to adulthood was also called Robert (Robert Dilley Green) and also married a lady with surname Green. It's looking more as if Sidney lived with Sarah Ellen and fathered James, but then left her to marry Elsie in 1935.
Still no sign of Sidney in 1921.

I think this seems very feasible. Sarah Ellen moves location within St Pancras/Islington after 1934. it may be coincidence that she moved just before Sid married another woman in 1935 but I think it's doubtful.
Sid then changes his name on the 1936 electoral register to WILLIAM Dilley. Elsie is with him. 1937 sees him reverting back to Sidney.
Sid's DOB is out by 11 years on his death certificate. Elsie obviously knew very little about him.

Were Sidney's parents Alfred Dilley and Alice Maud Barber?

His parents were Robert Dilley and Mary Jane Green. However, there were many Dilleys in Islington - many born in St Neots near Huntingdon.

When was James Dilley born?

Can you tell us your interest in her - are you descended from her son or one of her siblings?

Have you looked for her on the 1921 census?

My husband is the grandson of Sidney Dilley. Sid married Elsie Eaton in 1935 but there is a family legend that another woman turned up at his funeral.
Our Sid effectively disappears after the 1911 census and turns up again on the various electoral registers for Islington in the 1930's. I can't find him on the 1921 census at all.

It's possible that the Sidney Dilley in the late 1929's at the same address as Sarah Ellen is my husband's grandfather but I can't find out how Sarah Ellen is connected to this Sid.

Amended to read: James Dilley was, according to the 1939 census, born on 23 Apr 1920

Can anyone find out the back story for Sarah Ellen Dilley?

I can find her on the 1939 record in St Pancras, London. Born 25th July 1893
She has a son called James Dilley. The record says "married"

There is a death certificate for Sarah Ellen Dilley Oct 1973 which gives her birth as 20th August 1893. It may or may not be the same woman.

She is on various electoral registers in the late 1929's/early 1930s in Islington with a Sidney Dilley.

I can't find a marriage for her or a birth register for her son James.

I would like to know whether she did actually marry, who she married and whether her son was born under the surname Dilley or another name.

Any help, advice or guidance would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Jill

Thanks for your responses :)

I think the fact it was a pauper burial does point to the idea of a mass grave, cheapest option.
