One Name Studies: H to M / Marquet
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 12:10 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone heard this name?
My gg-grandfather was John Marquet, born Isle of Dogs, London 1822. My grandmother, Mary Marquet, had 4 sisters and 3 brothers (that I know of). I would be interested to know if anybody has this relatively rare, french sounding, name in their family tree.

I'm using The Genealogist, which gives the image and S&N references as:
RG12/3229/F?    &  CD21 R12-3229.pdf p.294 - 313
I've attached part of the image of the original page, which does not contain the actual address.

The census record shows a large number of soldiers (more than a dozen browser pages), including a couple of sergeants and some corporals. According to the transcript, the head of the 'household' is a cook named John Dance, but this could be an error in the transcription.

Armed Forces / Cheshire Regiment in Salford

an ancestor of mine joined the Cheshire Regiment as a 'boy soldier' in 1887. In 1891 census he was at the Salford Union Workhouse, a soldier in the infantry, aged 17.
What was an army unit doing in a workhouse in 1891?

Armed Forces / 8th Foot

According to the 1871 census my great grandfather was serving with the 8th Foot regiment in Salford. Any info on the regiment's activities around this time would be interesting.
