Thanks Jen
I wrote last post reply, late last night when I was a bit tired and cranky, so it may have seemed a bit impolite!
I have a Brother who lives in Hampshire and he is a "Spirituralist"! So he may be able to take a short cut! Only joking.
Thanks again, I will keep you posted if I make anymore progress on Nehemiah.
Regards

Further information from the Newfoundland Upward Clan, suggests that Nehemiah Upward was born in Bournemouth, not Poole?
Sorry for the confusion!
Thanks for your efforts

Thanks for your reply Paul, I've got pretty comprehensive records of the Upward families of Dorset, it's just this one on Nehemiah that is giving me grief! I appreciate your interest.

Keith

Looking for information re Nehemiah Upward (poole about 1807) who migrated to Newfoundland and was Father of one of the Newfoundland Dynasties. Q. was he a Grandson of James Upward (Stourpaine about 1740)? Any info on this Upward family, pre 1800, will be welcome.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Re: George Upward
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 02:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi Caz.
Yes! you have hit on the right George Upward and it brings me a little closer to the definite link between Samuel and Harriet Upward of Stourpaine, Dorset. I do have his Marriage details, they are as:-
16th Nov. 1872. George Upward, of full age, (labouror) of Dorset (Father Samuel Upward) married Caroline Cooper Baker, Junior!,(Father Edward Baker) spinster of Hove, In the Parish of Hove, District of Steyning Sussex.
If I can find him in the Dorset censuses of 1851 & 1871, I can probably tie it all up for sure.
Thanks Caz for your help, bye the way the clue I got from the 1891 census, was the fact that he stated his birthplace as Blandford (which covers Stourpaine) and not just Dorset as he stated in the 1881 census.
I am now looking for where he died, I've got an idea that he moved back to Dorset!
Anyway Caz, hope you had a good time with your reli's.
Love to chat with you again.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Miller & Quinn
« on: Friday 02 September 05 00:41 BST (UK)  »
Mary Ann Quinn was my Great Grandmother.
August 15th 1864, aged 20 married Johnson Miller, Glassblower, aged 23 in the Parish of Leeds, County of Yorkshire. Mary’s Fathers name was Peter Quinn, occupation, Weaver.

Handed down hearsay from my Grandmother, Mother & Auntie, always referred to Mary as being Irish, however on the census forms from 1871 to 1901, she has always stated her birthplace as being in the Northeast. (1871 – Northumberland, Newcastle on Tyne.) ( 1881 – Durham Newcastle,) (1891 – Newcastle,) ( 1901 – Northumberland, Newcastle)

My Great Grandfather, Johnson Miller, always quoted as being a Scot, stated his birthplace as:- (1861 – Durham, Newcastle) (1871 – Northumberland Newcastle on Tyne) (1881 – Durham, Billingham) 1891 – South Shields, Durham) ( 1901 Durham Town  n k ? ).

Johnson’s birth was possible registered under his middle name, James. His Father’s name was Alexander Miller married to Mary ? who by 1861 was widowed and living with  son Johnson in Rotherham.
Alexander & Mary were Scots, probably from the Stirling area and probably married there before moving to the Northeast of England, following the “glass making industry”. (Alexander was a Glass Maker ).
There were several of the Miller clan in the glass industry.

1871 census, Johnson & Mary Ann Miller. Children Catherine, & Robert lived in Powell St. Hunslet.
1881 census , Johnson & Mary Ann Miller. Children Catherine, Robert, James, William, Mary & Johnson, lived in Aire St. Knottingly.
1891 census Johnson & Mary Ann Miller, Children  James, Mary H., Johnson, Alexander, Ethel(my Grandmother) lived – Seaton’s Hard, Knottingly.
1901 census Johnson & Mary Ann Miller, Children Alexander, Ethel, & Granddaughter, Emily, lived in Aire St. Knottingly.

1} I am trying to find out more information on the family of Mary Ann Quinn, her Father Peter and from which Irish County they originated. I’ve been stuck on this one for sometime!

2} More Information on the Miller family pre 1861, i.e. where in Scotland Alexander & Mary Miller originally came from, marriage details, Mary’s Maiden name, when Alexander died. There are a few references to Alexander Miller (death 1859) and James Miller (birth 1841) from the Gateshead area. Maybe the 1851 census of that area would offer up a few clues!

Any information on the above, no matter how small, I will be grateful for.
QUESTION:- COULD SOMEONE LOOK UP THE 1851 CENSUS OF THE GATESHEAD AREA LOOKING FOR A FAMILY OF "MILLER" WHICH WOULD INCLUDE:-
HEAD, ALEXANDER MILLER, OCCUPATION, GLASSMAKER,
SPOUSE, MARY MILLER, AGE 40 APPROX.
SON,  JAMES OR JOHNSON MILLER, AGE10 APPROX.
SEVERAL OTHER MILLER CHILDREN?

Sussex / william marsh convict
« on: Sunday 28 August 05 08:59 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather was William Marsh Chimney Sweep, who operated in Brighton & Hove in the latter part of the 19th century up till the 1920s. His Father Robert was a sweep as were his Uncle & cousin (Henry & Henry Marsh.
From a Sussex History site, I have discovered a William Marsh age 17 "Sweep" from Brighton who at the Lewes Assizes in 1835 was sentenced to life transportation (REF: QR / 826 1835 Jan).
Question 1/ What was his Crime and where was he transported too and on what ship.
Question 2/ Is there a way to establish whether or not he was from my family of Marsh's.
The earliest record of Marsh that I have is the record of marriage between my Great Great Grandfather, Robert Marsh age 19 Chimney Sweeper to Mary Ann Pilbeam age 19 at Hove Parish Church December 5th 1858. Robert's father was named as Robert Marsh, bricklayer, deceased.
I will be gratefull for any info regarding this.
Regards.
Keith Upward, Queensland, Australia
I have found where he was transported too and on what ship. Arrived Van Dieman's Land August 1835 on the convict ship "Mangles" 7.
Still don't know what his crime was or his relationship to my Marsh family!

I am trying to find out more information on the family of Mary Ann Quinn, her Father Peter and from which Irish County they originated. I’ve been stuck on this one for sometime! The clue that may attach Peter to Belfast - Antrim, is the fact that his occupation was stated as "Weaver". The Weaving industry was very strong in Belfast at around this time!

Any information on the above, no matter how small, I will be grateful for.
