Hi
Many thanks to Majm and Sarra.
Actually I am not searching for the father. My problem is a little more complicated.
According to the birth certificate (dated 11th June 1888) Mahala HALL (maiden name CLARK) gave birth to a son Edwin Charles CLARK on 20th May 1888. As we have discussed he was also registered as Edwin Charles HALL but Mr Hall had been dead for 8 years.
According to the newspaper, court records and Children's register a baby was found in Dandenong Road, Windsor on 17th April 1888 and he was eventually called Edwin CLARKE.
I am trying to find anything which could link these two children together.
Mahala Clark Hall came from Bendigo and had her baby in Maryborough so we are heading there shortly and I want to make sure I have all the information I need before I go.
Thanks everyone so much for your comments. I understand the situation a bit better now.
Best wishes

Thanks Cando
I have got the copy of the page but if there are clues there I seem to have missed them. I will look at it again.
Many thanks

Australia / Victorian birth registration 1888
« on: Saturday 05 October 13 02:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi
In 1888 my husband's grandfather's birth was registered with the name of 'his' father. Then, once they realised the father had been dead for eight years, he was re-registered with his mother's maiden name only. Both registrations exist and they both have the same number with a 'r' after it.
I have a copy of the one without a father.
Does anyone know if there is a second (older) version under the 'father's' name or will they simply send me the updated version if I order it.
Many thanks
Angela

Staffordshire / TYRIE family
« on: Monday 26 August 13 03:39 BST (UK)  »
For some time between 1867 and 1873 my TYRIE family left their home in Bermondsey and lived at Fancy Walk in Stone. Alexander TYRIE was a cooper and his son (also Alexander TYRIE) was an apprentice cooper.
Would anyone have any ideas as to why a cooper would relocate to Stone for a period of no more than 6 years. Would there have been a been a sudden demand for coopers? Why?
His father and his brother were involved with naval coopering but he does not seem to have been.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
Best wishes

London and Middlesex / Re: Wards or areas in London
« on: Monday 26 August 13 03:30 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for your help. I have since had an exciting time exploring old London maps to gain more insight into my ancestors lives. There is so much information out there but it is great to have some help to find it.
I am sorry for the delay in this response. A senior's moment! I am sorry.
Thanks again

London and Middlesex / Wards or areas in London
« on: Friday 16 August 13 02:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have ancestors who lived in Grub Street (now Milton Street), Red Cross Street, London Wall, Fore Street around what is now the Barbicon.
It is easy to find these streets on a map (Rocque 1746) but I do not know where to go to look for the ward or suburb or whatever. How do I find out if it is Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets or somewhere else. Rocque has dotted lines around numbered areas which I think may indicate wards but the code has been cropped off.
I expect ward boundaries changed often but it is hard to tell someone what area your ancestors came from if you only know the street names.
Any help will be gratefully received
Best wishes
