World War Two / Re: King’s Own Royal Rifles - Ranks
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 09:30 BST (UK)  »
A captain commanded a company. I think 'temporary' also meant not a 'regular' commission. There was also a nasty connotation 'temporary gentleman'. The term was not used in WWII. After WWI, units were commanded by one rank higher, so company commanded by a major and still is. Never understood it although it was explained to me.

Not always, Captains are usually 2ics of a Company and as you mention the permanent rank for a Infantry Company Commander was a Major.

Temporary, Acting and Unpaid are terms frequently seen in Officer Field Returns in WW2 War Diaries. Temporary means a temporary promotion to replace a officer killed, wounded or posted away from the unit. It gives the flexibility of being able to return the officer to his/her substantive rank without too much paperwork.

All The Field and General CM registers for WW1 and WW2 are held at the National Archives. They contain all the murderers, rapists, thieves, deserters etc etc. The last time I looked the WW2 ones alone had around 20,000 names in the registers so as you can appreciate it's a needle in a haystack trying to find a individual.

Make sure you cancel your subscription with war forces if you gave them any money.

He may have been with 17th Indian Division which used a Black Cat emblem. If so he could have enlisted into the British Indian Army and his records will probably be in India which may explain why they couldn't find them in APC Glasgow.

If he was in the Coldstream Guards he would be ranked as a Guardsman, they don't have Privates ;)

Do you know what battalion he was in?

He was in the 5/7th Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders when he received his MC. I have a copy of the citation but I'm not allowed to share it on this forum.

Back again,

Ignore that, being stupid again. I was thinking of the other main guards barracks in Chelsea Bridge Rd. They were the ones demolished.

So all guards and household cavalry records still kept at Wellington barracks, Birdcage Walk.

John915

They were transferred to Manning and Records in Glasgow sometime ago. The Guards no longer hold them.
