Hi Helen,

Could you make another couple of posts so that I can send a Personal Message to you re our family please.  They don't have to include much but new members have to post three times before PM's can be sent.

Many thanks, M

First of all apologies for not getting back to you all sooner.  I have been unable to use the computer for a few days.  Secondly, many thanks to you all for your help.

I had also been wondering about contacting Ngati Kahungunu and will now do that.

Shanreagh I went looking after all your first posts and found the same website.  I also found a website showing marae's in the Hawkes Bay region and Ngai Te Ipu marae is named Whakaki but the meeting house isn't named so it does make me wonder if it is a smaller marae.
There is also an email contact on that site so will try contacting them. Hopefully it will still contact someone as it was set up in 2007.

So lots of work to do.
Many thanks, M

You wonderful, wonderful people! I have looked at this family in the past and put it in the too hard basket.
I have records of Sarah's son looking through the land courts and talking about land between Gisborne and Napier but the enquiries were all done under Sarah's name so nothing came up.
I am at the moment laid up after surgery and when I got the original enquiry very quickly put up what details I had and thought maybe they can go further thinking no more of it.

Now you have come back with this wonderful info.
I don't know much about contacting the Maori Courts. Would this be in person, if so I am immobile for approx 1 month more so will look into it when I can.

And as far as the electoral roll goes that is very promising.  Would I have to contact Ngati Kahungunu to get further info or is there a contact for the sub tribe Ngati Te Ipu?

Feeling very frustrated that I am so immobile when this break through has arrived :( but also over the moon that I might finally have some movement ;D

New Zealand Completed Requests / Riria Hopewai and her parentage
« on: Thursday 20 September 18 05:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi Clintonstorer2017,  In reply to your query on

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=651896.0

John Deam's 'mother-in-law' Riria died in 1922. You may know this but I will give you the info I have. The only info I have on Riria and her parentage has been taken from Sarah's death certificate and Riria's death certificate.
On Sarah's death cert it has Mihipo Waituruturu written as ‘maiden surname of mother’ (This is Riria)
and on Riria's death certificate it has her ‘Hapu’ as Ngati Kahununu (Ngati Kahungunu)and her mother is listed on attachment.  I have never taken this further as I got caught up in another family's history. So if you have further information I would be very grateful if you could let me know.

Regards, M

 :) :) :)
Jackpot! Many thanks for confirming it is them. I haven't been into FS for a while so this shows I need to keep going back over sites.
It must have been so hard for their mum Mary to see her two youngest leaving together not knowing if she would ever see them again.
And they didn't live long lives either, one 44 and one 49.
Another piece of the puzzle solved with everyone's generous help.

Thank you, M

Thank you very much for that info.  I went hunting further in the first site and found several mentions connecting him with mining and he was thought very highly of by the sound of it.  I am quite convinced this is my William.  With some people they nearly always include the first letter of their second name, in this case William J. He didn't always but enough times to show a path. I have a George J in another family and in a list of Georges can always spot him as the J is always there for him.  One of the articles I found was in 1895 for mail to be collected in Globe for a William J Deam.  The newspaper articles talk of his time in Globe and Yavapai as well. Both him and his brother Tobias were in the 1881 census in England and then both disappeared. They were the two youngest in the family. Tobias is living in Leadville, Colorado in 1891 and first child born in 1895 with his wife Louisa Uren. Also in mining. (Haven't managed to find their marriage yet) I'm not sure if the brothers went together to America or one followed the other as I haven't found travel info yet, but I think it is the two brothers.
Once again thanks, M

I apologise for taking so long replying, life does tend to get in the way sometimes.  In case someone wants to know what to do in the future I contacted the County Court, in this case it was the Yavapai County Superior Court.  They were very helpful and I was able to order an email copy through them for a small charge. Very easy to do in the end. Unfortunately they don't have any family information on them so I'm not much further ahead.  Never mind, it's all a learning curve isn't it.

Regards,
M.

Thanks for that Shellyesq.
Unfortunately the Family History Center is a little distance away so will try contacting someone through the arizona website first and if that doesn't succeed I will make the trip to the History Center.

Your help is very much appreciated as this is an unknown area to me.
Thanks again, M.
