Mayo / Re: Thomas Gormley born in Mayo, died in England.
« on: Tuesday 29 June 21 22:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi again,

I have recently come across some electoral records that show Thomas Gormley living in Cambridge at various addresses between 1947 and 1953 with a Betty Winter/ Gormley who is my
relative. I assume this means he was established in the area and that this was his primary residence?

Any idea where I can go from here? I am hoping to get in touch with living family of his.

Many thanks
Shosh

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Unexpected % dna.....why?
« on: Monday 24 May 21 08:28 BST (UK)  »
Ok, I think I understand. The ancestry ethnicity % is saying that my friends dna has elements that are similar to those people they have tested whose ancestry are claimed to have come from Scotland, though they may be incorrect or they may be from somewhere else but just known to have lived in Scotland. As the pool of testing increases and it become more accurate and less guesswork, then these % may change.

Do I understand?!

Thank you!

Thank you for your advice...unfortunately I still don’t understand.

Family research shows that this one line lived in Scotland. All the others lived in London or southern England. This goes back to about 1700s. Does this mean that prior to this, a large proportion of my friends ancestors were from Scotland?

Thanks again, sorry I’m not getting it!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Unexpected % dna.....why?
« on: Sunday 23 May 21 07:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Im a little confused about dna results.
A friend has had her ancestry dna report back. It shows:
72% Scotland
28% England

The confusing thing is that only her mother was Scottish and had Scottish ancestors. Her fathers family was entirely English. Going back,  Her maternal grandmothers line is Scottish but all other grandparents and family lines are English. There are no other Scottish ancestors other than in her mothers mothers line. Why would her % Scottish DNA be so high?

Many thank,
Shosh

Thank you so much! This looks really promising!

Do you know how I can verify any of this info?

Many Thanks!

Sussex / Brick wall

Hello,

I have hit a brick wall! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Fred Taylor born 21st March 1892 living with wife Hilda and son Geoffrey on 1939 census.

On Fred and Hilda’s marriage certificate from 1922, they are living in Worthing. His Father is given as Frederic William Taylor (deceased) and his Fathers profession was a bank accountant.

I cannot find Fred on the 1911 or 1901 census with a Father of this name? I can find Alfreds but unsure how to verify that this is correct. There is a birth in Steyning in 1892 of a Fred Taylor with mother’s name of Potter but I cannot find any marriage record.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks!

I’ve found Maud!

I received Griffiths death certificate and his son in law was the informant. I worked backwards and it turns out that Maud is actually Sally Maud and that the Waterloo’s Ellen was living with in 1939 was actually her daughter and Son in Law,

Woohoo!

Hi,

I am so sorry I have not seen any of the replies to this thread until now when I have started looking into it again. Thank you for all your input.

Sadly I am fairly sure that Mosemol’s Thomas is not the same Thomas Gormley as I am looking for.

If anyone has any further input it would be appreciated. I will now go and work out how to turn the notifications on...!
