Family History Beginners Board / Re: Looking for half brother OR sister

Thanks for your reply.  I did a general search for Heybrook House in Rochdale, thinking  it might have been a hospital for wayward ladies but No. 7 turned out to be a single house.

Yes, baby born 16th August 1946.  I did a search in births, deaths and marriages in Rochdale and nothing came up for that date.  I did search for the third quarter but not for the Dec quarter.  I'll check that next.

Family History Beginners Board / Looking for half brother OR sister

Hi, I have been searching for a half brother or sister (not sure which) for many years now with no success.  All I have is an official document from the County Borough of Rochdale where a mother, Irene Rawson, also known as Irena Gray, gave birth to a baby on 16 August 1946 and she has asked the courts to order the father of the baby (my father), Peter Bertram Smith, to pay maintenance etc to Ms Rawson for the baby's upkeep and it is approved by the courts.  Her address was listed as 7 Heybrook House, Rochdale and she was a single woman.  I can't get a lead on all this, made more difficult because I live in Australia now.  I'm asking if anybody could suggest a way I could try and trace this baby to see what happened to him/her?  Many thanks.

Yes, Rosy and Stan, I have tried to find out more about this matter a few years ago.  I don't work on my family tree continuously - I tend to leave it for sometimes a year or more and then pick it up again.  I guess that's the way many of us work on our trees, though.

Thanks, but that idea could be quite expensive but thank you for it.

Hi, I am trying to trace a baby born to Clara Hoyle in Lancashire (I think), born around 1942-5.  When my mother divorced my father  in 1945, this baby was cited as reasons for the divorce.  I later found out that he was paying maintenance for this baby who would be a half sibling of mine.  My question is how do I search the Bastardy Bond list for Lancashire?  I've tried Ancestry.com lists but nothing comes up.  Or, any other ideas come to mind?

Dear those who have replied to my post,

I don't want to break the rules of the website so I won't go any further but I'd just like to thanks those who have given me some info in which to follow up.  It's more than I could discover in my amateurish attempts.  And I do understand your concerns that one has to tread very sensitively in the direction I'm going.

However, it took me 50 years to find out I still had a father living, after pursuing his tracks over and over again and I found him just in time.  I wd like to do the same with my half  brother if that were possible.  We only live once, you know.

But thanks to everybody who replied.  I won't mention this subject again but will continue with my family history generally.
Best wishes

Hi CaroleW

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I can imagine Hoyle is a very common name - just my luck.  I'm from Lancs also.  When you have a moment, could you tell me if it possible to check on the Court Order online - ie when my father was told he had to support the child by weekly payments?  That would have been 1945 as well.  I've obviously tried to do this myself but couldn't come up with any way but I thought I might be able to get at it from a different direction.  Which direction, I don't know!!!!

Where to start?

All I have is my mother's divorce papers which state that my father fathered a child by somebody called Clara (not sure of the writing but it looks like Clara) Hoyle out of wedlock.  Divorce took place in Blackpool, Lancs, in 1945.  I do not know sex of the child.  He was ordered to pay support by the courts to the mother.

Cd you please reply to my email address, just in case something comes up and the person is still alive?

I will do the research work.  I just need someone to tell me where to start.  I live in Australia so can't pop in anywhere to search inhouse stuff.

Many thanks

Heather, thanks so much for all the info on the Grimes.  My darling grandmother is on that list, second from the bottom - Louise.  Lovely to see her there.
