Thanks both, I'll put it on my list of certificates to order! Yes I saw that Ancestry family too, but there is a record on familysearch for a Saul Moses Berlijn with those parents and I just wasn't sure if it was the right person, or if 2 and 2 had been put together to make 3!

Cheers for the pointers!

Europe / Saul/Charles Berlyn from Holland
« on: Thursday 28 September 17 23:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have a Catherine married to a Charles Berlyn (b. approx 1814) from Holland in the 1851-1871 census' (Charles is then a widower 1881-1891). The only marriage record I can find between a Catherine and a Berlyn is between a Saul Berlyn and Catharine Davis in 1845 Birmingham (Vol 16 Page 383). I'm not sure why he would have changed his name from Saul to Charles?

The only birth record for a Saul Berlyn in Holland is on familysearch is a Saul Moses Berlijn (b. 1818) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X13M-V5S.

I can't find a passenger list with a suitable time for him coming over to England, the only one I've found is 1854, coming from Rotterdam on the Diana and travelling with an M Berlyn. By this time he would have been married to Catherine.

Any ideas on whether this is all the same person would be wonderful! I can order the marriage certificate as my next port of call, but thought I'd ask here first in case anyone has any bright ideas or knowledge they can share with me!

Hi Ian!

Sorry for the late reply, I've been having a bit of a break from research! My friend ended up doing a DNA test and no Arifcan/Carribbean/anything remotely not European showed up! Which was not what we were expecting from the photo, but there you go! Thank you for the info, I will have a look at where I got to and cross reference it all.

Thanks again, that is all so helpful!

User paulrayner also managed to corroborate some info

Quote
My wife has been looking into the Price family as her ancestor is David Price (b1825), one of Joseph Price's brothers.  She has David's wedding certificate which shows his father (and hence your Joseph's father) as Joseph Price, occupation waterman.  This makes sense as being a waterman often ran in families.  From birth records on the family search website in the Droitwich area (where most of that generation, except Joseph jr, were baptised) it seems their mother was called Mary and my wife thinks she has found Mary on the 1841 and 1851 census where she is shown as originating from Exeter, which ties with Joseph jr being baptised there.  Mary is listed as married and a wife but no husband is present on either census, and to date we can't find Joseph senior on any census.  This makes it hard to know where he is from.
There is a wedding of Joseph Price to Mary Ann Grigg in Exeter in 1806 and this may explain the middle name of Joseph jr's first child!  The wedding record lists Joseph as a soldier. As this was during the Napoleonic wars and Exeter had a barracks this is not unusual and doesn't mean he is from Exeter originally. My wife has another ancestor from south Wales who joined the army and married in Edinburgh and had his first child in Colchester, before settling back in south Wales.

Just wanted to keep everyone who has been so helpful so far in the loop with the research!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Kauga, Germany?

Hi arthurk... when will I learn to read things properly  :o :o :o :o :o!

You're right. I just saw many 'Germany's highlighted! I'll have another look at what it might be. I wish there was some sort of list of mid 19th century German towns! I've recently gotten in touch with my dad's cousin who has her maiden name down as 'Berwin'. I'm not sure where he got this info from though, so hopefully it will lead to more info on where 'Kauga' is!

Paulrayner, that's awesome thank you! That definitely gives me loads to research as well with the barracks.

I don't suppose you know if there were any black ancestors in the Price family? Joseph Price's granddaughter Ada Bunch is mixed race, although we don't know what proportion, and I'm trying to trace her black roots!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Kauga, Germany?
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 00:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello all! I'm searching for a place potentially in Germany.... or Prussia.... or neither!

The lady in question is Rebecca Singer (abt 1835-1927, Singer is married name). She describes where she was born differently on all the censuses she appears in and I've tried finding this 'Kauga' but have not idea where it is! I realise it could be an anglicisation from the German accent, so any help would be much appreciated!

1861 - Prussia
1871 - Prussia
1881 - Germany
1891 - Kauga, Germany
1901 - Germany (British Sub)
1911 - Germany
