Fife / Re: William Pearson 1893-1916 died WW1 Turkey
« on: Sunday 14 January 24 03:47 GMT (UK)  »
A very old post, but I thought I would pass on the following information anyway:
Wm. Pearson. 1st F. & F.Y. is listed on the Auchterderran WW1 War Memorial.
Unveiled in 1922, this memorial commemorates 109 men from Auchterderran Parish.
Following details are from the Auchterderran Roll of Honour which is listed on the Scottish
     Mining Website.
Cpl. William Rodger Pearson, 1684, Fife & Forfar Yeomanry. Died of sunstroke on 25th May,
1916 at Swas, Turkey, while a Prisoner of War.

Fife / Re: does anyone know where Backbraes is now in Ceres Fife?
« on: Friday 13 January 23 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
Following description found on ScotlandsPlaces - Ordnance Survey Name Books / Fife and
Kinross-shire OS Name Books, 1853-1855 / Volume 17. Parish of Ceres.
Name: Backbraes. Authority for these modes of spelling: Thos. Henderson, Teasses. Robert
Cairns, Teasses Lime Work. John Lessels, Woodtop.
     Name: Backbrae. Authority: Co. Map.
Situation: About 1 mile S.E. from Cassindilly.
Description: This is a row of Cottages on the road side West of Teasses Grounds, occupied by the
farm servants of R.S. Christie Esq. of Teasses, to whom the Cottages belong.

Nothing of these cottages to be seen at the road side now. Google Maps has marked the area as Fleecefaulds Meadow Nature Reserve, although the image, taken in June 2009, doesn't yet show the Car Park, unless it sits back slightly and screened from the road by trees.

               Regards,     Dod.

The Common Room / Re: 1921 Scottish Census
« on: Sunday 04 December 22 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
My grandmother was a widow on the 1921 Scotland Census. The letters F.D. are in the Marriage/Orphanhood Column for my mother and uncles. I assume this means Farther Deceased. I've also noticed M.D. (Mother Deceased) and Illig. on some pages. Adopted children have 'Adopted Son' or 'Adopted Daughter' in the Relationship Column.
     Regards,     Dod.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: Annie Bell Wannan born Inverdovat, Fife in 1909
« on: Tuesday 30 August 22 22:24 BST (UK)  »
     Hello Chiad Fhear,
I've just found this old post. The following may be of interest.
Detroit Border Crossing dated 31st July, 1943. Patricia Bell Rafferty, born 5/1/1909 at
Inverdovat, Scotland. Birth date and place of birth match so definitely Annie.
Canada, Voters Lists. (Not sure about these, names might just be a coincidence.)
1963. St Paul, Ontario, Canada. James Rafferty, barber, and Mrs Pat. Rafferty, waitress.
1968. Rosedale, Ontario, Canada. James Rafferty, retired, and Patricia Rafferty.
Like you, I have all the family births, marriages and deaths except Annie.
               Regards,  Dorothy.

Scotland / Re: Confusing forename
« on: Friday 29 July 22 13:31 BST (UK)  »
Emily is a short/pet variation of Amelia. My Great Grandmother was baptized Amelia but was known as Emily. My grandmother, Amelia's youngest daughter, followed the Scottish Naming Pattern, by naming her first daughter after the Mother's Mother, but chose the short variation Emily. I've found several variations in spelling including Amellia, Emelia, Emilia, Emilly, and on one occasion Amy.
               Regards,     Dod.

The Common Room / Re: Elizabeth smith peterhead head to New York
« on: Friday 08 July 22 16:56 BST (UK)  »
Could this be the correct family?
1861 Census. Little Cocklaw, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.
William Smith    38  Blacksmith  b  Peterhead, Aberdeenshire.
          Christian Smith  46  Wife           b  Longside,            "
          William Smith    11  Son             b  Peterhead,         "
          Elizabeth Smith   9  Daughter     b        "                 "
          Alexr. Smith         8        -           b        "                 "
          Isabeth? Smith    3        -            b        "                 "
          John Davidson   20 Blacksmith J.man  b  Longside     "
Smith family are at Household Schedule No: 8.
An***try have run Household Schedule Nos. 2 - 12 together as one family, naming 75 year old Jean Robertson as mother of the children from all the families!
P.S. Forenames Elizabeth and Isabella were interchangeable at this time in Scotland. Elizabeth, age 9, may be the Isabella born 22nd July 1850 (from Daisypetal's post). While Isabeth age 3, may be Elizabeth born 11th Nov. 1857.
               Regards,     Dod.
