Have been in touch with Philip Paris, author of "Orkney's Italian Chapel".  He was very helpful and provided me with a copy of the letter Balfour Beatty had about the "Special Command Mention" by Vice Admiral Sir Hugh Binnie for the men involved in rescuing the injured man described in the book.  After further discussion within my family, we've reached the conclusion the man injured wasn't my father although the scenario and his injuries were so similar.  the accident described in the book happened in 1941, but we have evidence that my father's accident had to have been after November 1943.  We have a telegram sent by my father from Orkney to my mother on their 3rd wedding anniversary in November 1943 and also my brother, born in 1942, remembers being told that he was left in the care of a neighbour when my mother travelled to Orkney to be with my father after the accident.  So, not quite there yet, but picking up a lot of useful background information.

Thank you for all of this.  Shame about the wall!! Although, by the sound of the article on wee it's probably just as well it's been repaired.

I've gone for the direct, if cheeky, approach and sent a message to Peta Glew through Facebook.

Thanks again,

Fiona

Hello Dave,

Are you still climbing walls at Cathcart Old?  I'm new to family history, so very late on this topic.  My 3x great grandfather was Session Clerk in Cathcart Parish Church in the first half of the 19th century.  He died 13th January 1854 and I wondered if he might be buried in Cathcart.  His name was James Bell and he was a schoolmaster.  His wife was Jane Bell (m.s. Kerr)  and perhaps she's there too, although she died in Callander.

Have you come across these names in your visits?

I'd seen something similar - but this is a better photo, thanks.

Hi,

The Donaldsons were at 10 Guildry Court, Bridgegate, Glasgow in 1861,1871 and 1881.

I'm afraid we can rule out Malcolm Rouchhead as the original Malcolm Donaldson.  I found his death registration on Scotland's People.  He died in 1940 and his name is given as "John Jarvie formerly Malcolm Roughhead; Coal Miner (retired); Single.  Mother: "Margaret Roughhead, Cotton Weaver, afterwards married to Thomas Jarvie". (I suspect this was a common law marriage as I can't find a marriage registration for them).

Back to the hunt!

Yes, I'd thought of trying to contact the author.  He lives about 45 mins away from me in Tain - or did when his last book came out.  Thanks for the other suggestions for finding out more - I wouldn't have thought of those avenues.

That's an interesting list.

Re Agnes Roughead - the puzzle with this entry is whose mother she is - not Thomas Jarvie's from her age - which is why I thought the age might be wrong, but you could be right that it's the name that's wrong.

FamilySearch has a Marion "Roughead", daughter of Margaret, born 25th August 1873.  Malcolm "Rouchhead" was born 31st July 1857 and there are 2 Agneses - Agnes "Rouchead" 20 October 1859 and Agnes "Rouchheed" 22nd March 1867 - you see what I mean by all the spelling variations!
