Just to add: Assuming the children are all born to the same father, there is also the possibility of one of the names in the register being entered incorrectly. I have come across a few examples of this, certainly more frequently than I have come across two living children with the same name. That said, I have done little research in Scotland, so people can correct me if this may have been more common there in comparison to England and Wales.

If a child of a couple died, back then it was very common for families to re-use the same name on another child born later. Are there any burial records for the parish to see if the first Johnne died young? It is quite unusual, but not completely unheard of for two living children of the same person to have the same name.

The Common Room / Re: Needing help with Griffiths Jones marriage.

Not sure if you already read the initial version of the post in question prior to editing, but rather than the 1870 marriage in Holywell, the reply above mine previously instead referred to the marriage of a Thomas Griffiths in the district of Corwen in 1869, and one of the possible spouses for that marriage is listed as an Ellin Jones.

I'd say the Holywell one seems much more likely due to the year and more significantly the location, but the Corwen one could still perhaps be an outside possibility. From a quick search I can't see any other Thomas Griffiths marrying either Mary or Ellen Jones that could realistically be them, but I could have missed one. Do you have any information on the fathers of either Thomas or Mary Ellen that would help confirm the correct marriage?

There is a Thomas Griffiths marrying an Elenor Jones at Holywell, Civil Marriage in 1870 (see North Wales BMD), which seems a good candidate. This would fit with them stating they had been married 40 years on the 1911 census.

The Common Room / Re: Order of Siblings or Children in Will
« on: Tuesday 24 May 22 12:01 BST (UK)  »
In my experience, if the children of the testator/testatrix are listed one after another (e.g. to my children Elizabeth, Thomas, Sarah etc.), then they are usually listed in either age order, or sons followed by daughters. However, if they are mentioned separately in different bequests I would say it isn't that unusual for them to be just in some random order. I've certainly had a number of wills that mention specific children first that are not the eldest son/daughter. Sometimes daughters might be grouped together by their marital status as well.

I've not thought about it much, but my feeling would be that siblings might be less likely to be ordered by age than children.

Thanks. There appears to be no burial records there.

Shropshire / Welshampton Parish Records/BTs
« on: Saturday 12 February 22 14:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

From searching online there seems to be ambiguous information on which 18th Century parish records for Welshampton survive.

The records on Findmypast begin in 1772. This is consistent with the MF parish records stated to be held by Shropshire Archives on shropshire.gov.uk. However, there are earlier dates listed on some sites, although these could be referring to BTs I guess. There are also some pre-1772 baptism records searchable on familysearch, although I assume they are from BTs. Familysearch has a MF listed (not accessible off-site) for the following (no burials):

Baptisms, 1636, 1659-1660, 1662-1667, 1669, 1671-1677, 1680-1682, 1701-1711, 1718-1782, 1785-1787, 1792-1810; Births, 1787-1792; Marriages, 1661, 1663, 1665, 1667, 1671, 1674-1675, 1677, 1701-1704, 1707, 1709-1711, 1721-1730, 1733-1736, 1739, 1742-1746,

I was wondering if someone more familiar with the parish could clarify more what exists and what doesn't. In paritcular:

- Is the above listed BT dates about right as a summary of what survives from pre-1772 baptisms?

- Has all record of pre-1772 burials been lost, or has that list of dates by familysearch just been truncated before getting to the list of burials? I'm not so familiar with Shropshire BTs, but from other counties I've found normally that bap/mar/bur are listed together year by year. In that case normally if the baptism BTs for a given year survive, so do those for burials etc.

Many thanks,
Chesters

Is anyone else having more trouble with the census search? On the search where you I can actually search using birthplace, I can no longer seem to just put in a birth county. When searching for people born in villages, the place that is entered on each census/the spelling will change from census to census, so I tend to just search by birth county.

There is the field called "Birth Place". But, for example, if I just put in "Jones" and birth place as "Cheshire", I get 0 results.

The 1851 census still has a field for birth county, but the others don't seem to.
