Thanks to all,
I now have a father's name and profession!  All the links you have sent I will promise to explore over the coming days and weeks and hopefully it will reveal more for me.  I am a bit slow as I am limited in my cognitive function and concentration level, I have to wait for good periods.....

Offaly (Kings) / John Whelan born 1827, Rathvilla

Hi,
I have an Irish ancestor of my wife. - 2nd great grandfather - who has been a long term "brick wall" in my research.

He is shown on later UK and India records as John Whelan born c1827 in Rathvilla, Co Offaly, Ireland.  I have no parentage or siblings for him.  I did find a record for his marriage  to Frances BEEBY of Castle Donington at Naas, Co Kildare, in 1858.  By this time John WHELAN is in the 5th Royal Irish Dragoons and is stationed at the Curragh, Co Kildare, not far from Naas.  John died in army service, out in India, in 1868.

I would love to find any family for John WHELAN - parents and other ancestors, and also any siblings.

Hoping someone may be able to help with advice or information.

Regards,
Garry

Hi Shaun,
Thank you for your welcome.  I have indeed moved on after my last posting.  Illness has prevented me from doing much research but, although still bed bound most of the time, I have a new laptop which enables me to do some research wherever I am if I am well enough.

Progress has been:
1.  I now have a marriage for Mary Ann Whelan to William Francis Hawkins in 1884 in Dublin, Ireland. Probably on return from India and before they settled down back in Stinchcombe.
2.  Like wise, the marriage of John  Whelan to Frances Beeby was registered in 1858 in Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland.  This is a town close to the regiment's barracks at the Curragh.
3.  I now have a third child for their marriage, Frederick William Whelan born 21 Aug 1863 born at sea as the regiment and families were en-route to India. I have contact with relatives of this child, he went on to spend 25 years in the army himself and on leaving the army settled in Australia with his wife and some of their younger children. The 1901 census shows him at barracks in Suffolk and shows him as being born on HMS Euphrates.
4.  I have seen a record that shows John Whelan died of disease (unspecified) on 27 Jun 1868 at Lucknow, India.
5.  I have also seen a record for his widow (Frances, nee Beeby) marrying Joseph Donald 26 Oct 1868 at Lucknow, India. They had five children, the last two being born in Wrexham, Wales, where they settled from about 1880 onwards.  I now have records of many descendants from these children, my wife's half cousins!!

I have still to find any parentage for John Whelan, born 1827 in Rathvilla, Co. Offally, Ireland.

I have not researched the parents of Joseph Donald, as they are not direct ancestry to my wife.  He was born in 1839 in Hulme, Manchester.  He died in 1892 at St Asaph, military camp.

I would like to find a death record for Frances, would be Frances DONALD, to complete her picture.  Last seen in 1901 census as a widow at the home of her son Arthur Clement DONALD in St Helens, where he was a glass bottle maker.

If anyone wants to know more about the above, please private message me and I can send files with more details to you.

Thanks again to all who replied to this thread whilst I was absent, and apologies that I was not able to reply earlier.

Garry

Hi David,
sorry that I have not replied before now, I have been inactive for a number of years and just logged on tonight.

I do have William BEEBY born 1844 Castle Donnington, married in 1868 in Leicester district to Margarette Sneary RICHARDS born 1848 Stamford, Lincolnshire.  I have EIGHT children for this marriage, one of whom is shown as Willie BEEBY born 1874 in Castle Donnington.

This must be your William BEEBY born 1874.  I had no marriages for him or his siblings, and stub branch.  If all above is correct you are a 7th cousin to my wife.

Allan,
would love to share my BEEBY research with you.  Most of the more distant ancestry I have obtained by sharing with other relatives over the years.

BOTH - please send me a personal message and I will send you my email address along with my BEEBY line research. I have just added your branch to my tree, David!

Cheers,
Garry Brookes

Hi Jane,
well, it is very good indeed to contact you!  This is quite an old post and I rarely if ever visit the site these days.  I do indeed know a lot about Albert Warburton HANLON - my great grandfather too (makes us half second cousins I think).  I have been in contact with a descendant from his "marriage" with Mary Ashley already, a William Roderick HANLON in Canada.  He's called BILL and has the surname KAMERMAN though he's reverted to his genealogically correct HANLON surname.

A lot of what you've said I've heard from him in part or full, also through another person descended from Mary's brother.  Yes, he was a rogue!  It appears that he didn't actually marry Mary ASHLEY, though they gave all the appearance of being married.  He did marry my great-gran Sarah Ann REYNOLDS in Newcastle upon Tyne, I have a copy of the cert though he marries as Albert Ashely-Hanlon!!

It seems that things went quickly wrong - I believe each "wife" found out about the other.  Sarah was pregnant with my gran and ended up in the Workhouse at Berrington.  Mary had nothing further to do with Albert I believe.  Sarah remained officially married to Albert and became a widow in WW1 as you suggested.  Sarah married her common law husband Pryce ROBERT in 1928, having gone to work for him about 1903/4 and then taken in as his "wife".  Pryce was a widower with two lads, Sarah had my gran with Albert and the Sarah and Pryce went on to have two girls of their own.  So the five children were all brought up as "ROBERTS" even though they weren't married!!

I have also heard stories about how Mary never remarried and went on to be killed in WW2.

Jane, I would love to add you into my tree and wonder if you'd like to swap details - after all we are blood relatives  even though only in the "half" sense!!  I'll send you my e-mail address so I can send you details of my side of the family and also copies of the certificates I have.  Can't wait to hear how you fit in!!

Cheers,
Garry

Sorry!  But I never did locate the records.  I believe they (or copies) may be at the Shropshire Records Office - one day I'm going to go......  I'd like to find out how long my great gran and gran were there for an what information I can find.

Hi 6666,
I have ancestry back to Richard HABBERLEY born in 1670 in Shropshire, my 7th great-grandfather.  He lived at Little Wenlock.  There are lots of later mis-spellings of the surname - ABBERLEY, HABERLEY, HABBERLY, etc.....  I do think, therefore, my line does not have German roots unless you have details that far back in time?

The surname is quite rare, but does have it's roots in Shropshire.  There's a village of Habberley south-west of Shrewsbury, and also a district on the outskirts of Kidderminster carries the name.

Myself I am a HABBERLEY by direct male descent, but got stuck with a BROOKES surname thanks to Victorian morals.....

Cheers,
Garry
