Bangor Abbey's earliest registers were destroyed in Dublin.
St Comgall’s CoI, Bangor are transcribed on RootsIreland.

Down / Re: Grange (Greencastle DED) 1901 ... lost?
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 19:51 GMT (UK)  »
Nish6 you are replying to a 14 year old question but eadaoin should see as regularly posts.
Some of the Townlands missing from the 1901 census are now accessible by browsing the film images online on Familysearch as some were photographed but skipped on NAI. Others escaped filming.

This is the thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=601757.0
There are certainly Townlands missing 1901 compared to 1911 (18 vs 21).

Angus (Forfarshire) / Kirriemuir Cemetery headstone inscription
« on: Wednesday 20 March 24 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
There is a headstone image for my great-great grandparents in Kirriemuir Cemetery plot Fa 79. Unfortunately the face is in shadow and with the mottled granite the inscription is illegible. If anyone local was able to provide details I would appreciate it.

Erected to the Memory of George Smith Horse Hirer Kirriemuir who died 27th May 1870
....illegible....
Margaret Helen Widow of Thomas Millen of Hexham died 12th August 1959 aged 89.

[Mary, nee Dunn, his wife remarried John Mitchell 1872, the headstone looks like it was erected after the 1959 interment]

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry Problems...

Ancestry is **** at the moment. One minute it works then the next 3 it doesnt. Error message adding this record, please go back or refresh, we have recorded the fault - so they should DO something (if they cared) or just black screens when try to open search results before adding to tree. Clearing cache seems to make no improvement.

The trouble is, I cannot find his birth registration anywhere

Another try by someone else would do no harm eg perhaps forename was not decided upon when the birth was registered. Suggest post the names of the parents and the child.

Could you pl  provide a link to the application to join the Civil Service in 1867
British Civil Service Evidence of Age
https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=GBOR/CSEOA/00037885

"I Daniel McNeill of Larne in the County of Antrim, Flesher, do solemenly and sincerely declare that my Son John McNeill nominated for the situation of Rural Post Messenger was born on the Second day of November 1848, and is now above 18 years of age."

And I make this solem declaration conscientionly believing the same to be true.
Declared at Larne 10 Jan 1867 by declarant Daniel McNeill (X his mark) and signed by a Justice of the Peace taking the declaration. Witnessed also by Postmaster James Reath.

Accompanying note with 1d Inland Revenue stamp attached.
"I have examined and find that John M'Neill Son of Daniel M'Neill and Rose Barry was baptised in November 1848" Francis W Kenna, PP [Parish Priest] Larne, Jany 7, 1867.

I would therefore say you are conflating 2 totally disparate events different fathers, occupation and religious denominations, although which one is valid for your tree is unclear. Perhaps need to work back again from the 1901/11 census using his children to confirm mother's maiden surname and denomination and verify/locate the correct marriage entry. Or just discount this Civil Service application.

The register for the 1848 is missing on NLI https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1142 It could be in PRONI, they only give an overall range in their guide.
but "It was not until 1852 that Larne and Ballygowan became separate parishes and the first church was built by Fr Arthur O’Neill on the site of an old disused slaughterhouse in 1831 and basically this is St MacNissi’s today.
Two priests in particular, figure high in the development of Catholicism in the town of Larne - Fr Francis McKenna, parish priest here for 41 years in Victorian times"

Consulting eCat whilst the period is missing in MIC1D/68 it seems to to present in MIC1D/90/1
Description:1828-83: Copy of a register of baptisms 1828-83; and of marriages 1828-82. Up to Easter 1852 the entries relate to the Roman Catholic parishes of Larne, Carrickfergus and Ballygowan.

I saw Labourer in image but must admit to missing the 'deceased', [Farm] Labourer vs Farmer sometimes depends on the informant's preciseness. I'll remove those erroneous later death references.

1. I'm afraid I don't recognise the reference you quoted
the two links are indentical from Sctomum & Kiltaglassan, Scotmum has used shrinklink to reduce it in Your Tools below in the brown footnote section. Both match the rootsireland transcript date and names, you said you had I've not been able to access the original record of the 1875 marriage and wished to confirm its accuracy.
[actually the pdf image is itself a period transcript, if you really want to view the original ledger one it will be imaged on GRONI]

Although the marriage was at Ballycarry Presbyterian, Templecorran Parish it says John McNeill was a resident of Carnlough which is on the border of Tickmacrevan & Ardclinis. [Ticknacross Parish does not exist]

Your inability to find a baptism record could be because it is not online, or was not recorded in the first place. Those two parishes are not on RootsIreland and Ardclinis C of I registers are still held locally.
Cross reference https://rootsireland.ie/antrim/online-sources.php with https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/sites/default/files/publications/Guide-to-Church-Records-October-2019.pdf

An Andrew McNeill died 1866 Larne District aged 63 and 1869 aged 55, both imaged only on GRONI.

Fermanagh / Re: Birth or marriage record - Hugh McCaffrey - Aghalurcher
« on: Wednesday 06 March 24 00:29 GMT (UK)  »
Church records do exist 1780recording baptisms, but NOT Roman Catholic ones in Fermanagh or Tyrone. The Penal Laws are the reason why R.C & Presbyterian registers start later. There was actually a Hugh McCaffrey from Clogher area in the FindMyPast military service records c.1810-14. Until Civil marriage registration started no parents are mentioned in Catholic or Protestant marriage registers and no ages for bride or groom, just their names townland and the 2 witnesses, to identify parents you need the baptism.
