Australia Resources & Offers / Grave photo request - Melbourne General cemetery.
« on: Monday 10 January 22 09:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hello and thank you in advance.

After many years I've finally located the death and burial location of my G Grandmothers young husband who died on 12 January 1902 and wondering if someone may be able to take a few photographs for me please.

His plot according to Findagrave (who had information wrong about him and I've notified) is MGC-WES-Comp-E-No-817.  I did look up the cemetery database and he does not appear.
Have attached his death and funeral notices.

Regards and thanks again

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch

Coming  in late to this, but for future reference The Friends of Linwood Cemetery Trust have done a considerable amount of photography of graves/plots over the years and have been for years trying to work out ways to get them accessible without much luck.  They are backed up on harddrives.  Brick walls with Govt organisations and as you can imagine not largely funded and only run by a handful of volunteers now, getting them online and maintaining that is almost impossible.  Their website appears to have a warning when it opens but it's not dangerous to ignore as far as i can see, I've opened it a couple of times -  and I know it was being work on the back end properly while I was more fully involved with the trust. https://www.linwoodcemetery.org.nz

I am a Lifelong member however live in Auckland and don't have access to the photographs that have been taken over the years.  The former secretary Alexandra who did an immense amount of work in relation to naming and processing them moved back to England in 2016 however did keep her hand in it for a while but not now.  The facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/TheFriendsOfLinwoodCemetery - if you cannot locate images elsewhere.

The membership was near critical level last I heard as the members have dwindled in the trust.  Most are elderly with a couple of 'younger' ones thrown in and answers may not be immediate due to their family commitments, but i keep an eye as admin on the page (for now) and i can try and move the query along if need be.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Brompton Cemetery look up request
« on: Monday 07 June 21 04:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello lovely volunteers out there.
My GGGG grandfather George WORT was buried in Brompton 1865.
I have a screen snap of the location from the royalparks.org.uk grave locator but it doesn't seem to allow me to add images to this group.  It's the very back left section of the cemetery - closest to the West Brompton station.  The magnification is not great but looks like there is no headstone.

Would sks be able to maybe take a snap at some stage for me please?

Thanks in advance!

This map shows the "Lock Burial Ground" https://maps.nls.uk/view/103313048#zoom=5&lat=1630&lon=2783&layers=BT

This side by side shows Bartholomew Street which was the site of the Lock Hospital https://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-london/vol25/pp121-126
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=18&lat=51.49514&lon=-0.08697&layers=163&right=BingHyb

The burial Ground is shown as a Recreation Ground on the !893-1895 map.
An 1800 map shows it as "St. George's Burial Ground"

Stan

Excellent links thanks so much!  I also learnt a lot about the Lock hospitals  - fascinating!

James Kitchener died 3 Oct 1847, at St George the Martyr Workhouse

His body was taken out by his wife.
Register of deaths says he was buried 5th October, but where?
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHV-L3NY-MZ3N?i=396&cat=1327715

St George the Martyr burial register is online. James not buried there.

Yes i have all that and his death certificate but thank you :)  I'm a long time family genealogist (40+ yrs) and a long time ancestry subscriber!

Photos of the church i hunted before posting didn't appear to show a cemetery which prompted me to post.

Cheers!

Hi there

My GGGG grandfather James John KITCHENER died 3 Oct 1847 aged 47 at the Workhouse, Mint Street, Southwark of diarrhoea.  He is in the deaths and burials register for the above church.

My query is what cemetery was nearby that he might be buried in.  All my searches over the years have not yielded a cemetery for him.  He was only in the workhouse due to illness and his wife Caroline was living on the outside.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I'm doing some research on Devenny families in the Raymoghy/Taughboyne area of County Donegal. I believe Isabella was baptised in Taughboyne in 1842 (https://www.ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/Taughboyne/TaughboyneBaptisms.pdf) and married Robert in 1870 as I'm sure you know. I think I found a Flickr post where you note Isabella is Scottish.

Her mother was Catherine Devenny according to the baptismal record - there are other Devenny families that emigrated to NZ so I am wondering if there is a connection?

Regards

Jason

This seems to fit with what Millipede found..

Herts Guardian Tuesday 15 Nov 1853

On the 28th ult...at Royston,Martha, widow of the late Mr.S.Luke, in the 48th.year of her age.

Jackie

Yes thank you and Millipede.  I too found this death entry and it threw me a bit because it's 5 years out for her birth date of 1810 but not an uncommon thing in those days - lack of accuracy!

I have information stating that Martha emigrated to NZ in 1857 given by the family who donated the brooch in 1966 however I think they may have been confused because her son Samuel [same name as his father] emigrated to NZ that year and I've found no mention of a Martha LUKE emigrating at the time thus far.  I have a hunch i'll be contacting descendants of the family here in NZ to try and clarify that one!

Thanks again to both of you ;o)
