Thanks Peter. This son travelled with Eliza as well as a younger son James. All three suffered dysentery on journey to Hobart and one actually died.

Thanks for that. Do you have any information on their births and parents births. I gather they never married. My Great, great, grandmother was Eliza Howis, who was transported to van Diemen's land and married, had many more children to Frederick Butler. My grandmother ended up living in Auckland New Zealand from teenage years till death. I live in Australia.

Hello There. Thanks for reply. Some interesting info.
Is your Sylvestre the same one that was also in Cuckfield workhouse at one time, Eliza’s sister? I think there were some brothers as well.

Hi. I am not sure how I found the Ship's journal, but it was very interesting. I think I may have googled the name of the ship and then followed links to journal. But I have a copy of what I found. All three of the listed Howis ancestors aboard (Eliza, James and William were seen by the doctor for dysentery.

I wonder if there is any chance that I may find living relatives of James William Henry Martin. (either in Australia or New Zealand)

I agree that James was in the Union Workhouse, but I would like verification of father's name and town, age etc. I have looked through a number of sources, such as 1841 and 1851 census for Sussex area, finding Eliza and child James, but not youngest child, William. The record I found Eliza's sentence at Lewes assizes, mentioned that she was arrested with her husband James and father William but no surnames were given, making me wonder whether it was her father or husband's father. The other interesting thing about tracking this couple is that I was able to get much more information about Eliza as a female convict, what happened to her in Tasmania etc. But both her first husband, a convict, and eventual husband in Tasmania, were so much harder to find.

Thanks for that. I believe that her older son was in a Union workhouse somewhere too. I would like to get information about her marriage to William Howis and her maiden name if possible so I can track down her parents and siblings. I believe that William was also arrested over the charge of receiving stolen goods, but I do not know if he received jail sentence or transportation as she did.

I am related to Eliza Howis who was a convict, transported to Van Diemen's Land with her son James and William on the ship "Anna Maria" 1851-1852. I need to know her parents's names and details of her sons' births.
