Family History Beginners Board / Re: Identify airman Dick Jeffrey Lehmann

Hi Joogoo,
It all sounds very interesting. I am very interested in seeing that photo. I don't want to put my private email on the site, is there a way to ask Roots chat to send it somehow? I get notifications of pending messages, so there must be a way?
Did you listen to the tapes made at the International War Museum, as mentioned in the previous replies to this post?  This is what I know from my research:
Geoffrey Lehmann's father was Albert Henry Lehmann, a military tailor with a shop in Station Road -Aldershot, Hampshire. His mother was Gertrude Emma Annie Baker born 31-3-1883, Fullham , London.  She was a school teacher and a member of the Aldershot Education Committee. Her mother was Sarah Ann Baker and her father was Frederick Baker born 1852 in Surrey.
According to the 1911 census, the family lived at 26 Grosvenor Road, Aldershot, Hampshire.
Geoffrey was 16 when he tried to join the navy at South Hampton. He was sworn in to the RAF office at Cardington, Blackpool. He trained as a flight mechanic Airframes. His squadron's name kept changing, and he was part of the Transport Command in 1946.He was also at Kabrit for six weeks. He was also involved in the Berlin Airlift. He was stationed at Tegel in 1948. He revisited Berlin in 1999 after the war, and was part of a veteran group visit.
I hope this helps. Oh yes, his last position stated on his death certificate was Airworthiness Engineer( Aeronautics) retired. He had been living at Weston-super-mare , and his son Arthur Richard John Lehmann was present at his death.
I look forward to your reply.

Just one more thought, if I could contact Arthur Richard John Lehmann, he was a company officer of Access Storage solutions in Middelsex England. I think he recently retired. He could possibly confirm our research, but I cannot locate him?

Good day Joogoo, I am so thrilled to have a reply to my last post. Yes, I am interested in pursuing your mystery. How strange is that name? Geoffrey was in North Africa, I have his service records ( redacted,) from the RAF but he was not a pilot. I have his brother as Henry F Lehmann, I think  he died in the war as I have not been able to find any information on him. I know that his second marriage to Joy Goodland was in his later years. I know he had a son, Arthur Richard John Lehmann, born 1964, present at his death on 2-3-2001.  I would love to see your photos. I look forward to your reply. PS. I now know that his name was Geoffrey, not Dick Jeffrey!
Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Geoffrey Lehmann - fitter 2 airframes - RAF
« on: Wednesday 13 July 16 05:32 BST (UK)  »
This is the photograph kindly sent to me by the IWM regarding air fitter 2 - airframes Geoffrey Lehmann. I am now seeking help with any other photographs of him. I know that he passed away in 2001 in England. Was married to Cecillia Tutt and Phyllis Joy Goodland.
He served in Vereeniging, Gatow and Tegel. As a veteran, he visited Berlin in remembrance of his service of the Berlin Air Lift.
Can anyone help me please?

Hi Jorose
I think you may be right. The audio sounds like this could be the man I have been looking for.
However, I don't have any proof that it is him. I have researched Geoffrey Lehmann, he was born on 18-6-1921 and died in 1921. According to the audio, he first applied to the Royal Navy at 16years, but joined the RAF at 17years old. His father was also in the military, his mother a teacher. I would dearly like to match the photo I have to this man. Does anyone out there have a site or lead I could use to match this photo to this name?
Thank you very much.

Thank you both. I have contacted the SADF and the SAAF before, and they could not help me. So I know he is a 2nd Lt, in the South African Army, who flew with the RAF. I thought I could trace him via the RAF but to no avail. I thought I might see which battalions flew with the RAF but I think this is rather a needle in a haystack. The man in the second photo, I have been advised that he could be from the 6th South African Armoured Division who were in Portofino,Italy. But without another photograph I can't state who is for sure. The only Lehmann listed in the Roll of Honour , was a private R.W.Lehmann , First City Cape Town Highlanders, who died at age 25 on 16-5-1945. I found this information in the book by James Bourhilll 'Come back to Portofino.'
James tells me this cannot be my Mr Lehmann. I have one more clue - a birth certificate states he was born in London or New York and he was 24 in 1944.

Thanks Gene Chaser. Do you have any idea how I could trace him back to the Army Air Corps?
I know he was in Cairo, and Vanderbijl Park ,Transvaal South Africa. But that is all I know. I would dearly like to confirm his identity.
Thanks for your help :)

Hi everyone, I would really like some help with identifying the man in this World War 2 photo. He was said to be Dick Jeffrey ( Geoffrey) Lehmann. I have two photos, either could be him. Any details about his uniform etc would be great. Thank you.
