Family History Beginners Board / Preston Family at Long Preston
« on: Saturday 24 February 24 05:22 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather, William Preston married Ellen Oldfield 1837 in Settle.  They went on to have, I believe, 13 children.

What I want to know is did William have any other family, siblings etc., and more about Ellen Oldfield because I can't find out anything prior to their marriage.  I have them on the 1851 Census with William as a Cotton Weaver but nothing before that.

Any help would be great.

Family History Beginners Board / Mary Byrne / Maria Burns
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 05:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for my great great grandmother.  Maria Burns / Mary Byrne.

Maria Byrne married John Connolly Sept 1855 in Liverpool 8B 546.  Names recorded as Joannis Connally and Maria Byrne. The marriage gives the father's names as Andrew and Thomas which is given to their later children.

However, at baptism of Eliza Ann Connolly dob 2/03/1865  baptised 14th March 1865 at St Anthonys Catholic Church mother's maiden name is given as Byrnes.

Spelling then varies to Joannis Connally and Maria Burns at the baptism of Andrew Thomas Connally Dob 21/12/1862 baptised 4th January 1862 at St Albans Church Liverpool.

In 1861 Census Mary Conolly aged 26 is head of the household and she is recorded as a mariner's wife (family history) and born in Ireland. When she registers her daughter Rose Ann CONLEY 1859, she gives her maiden name as BURNS.

With so many variations in the spelling of surnames it gets difficult to be sure if I am on the correct Mary Burns /Maria Byrne

I can't trace her back to Ireland and I am desperate to follow this maternal line - I find you can be surer of your maternal line than the paternal one - most of the time!  They didn't have DNA in those days!

Any assistance would be great.  Thank you

Thank you every one.  The link to her parents as Maria Byrnes or Maria Burns is a step further back  Also John Conolli or the different spelling of Connally helps.

Any further assistance would be greatfully appreciated as I want to get back as far as I can in the Maternal line but also trace the family to Ireland if possible

Thank you again

I am trying to trace the family back from Eliza Ann Conolli aged 18 when married to Jeremiah Sullivan aged 21 7th February at Immanuel Parish Church Oswaldtwistle Lancashire.

Eliza Ann was illiterate and only made her mark so not completely sure of the spelling of her surname.
Her father is down as John Conolli  - Sailor.

Would love to trace back to her mother and grandparents.

Think they were Catholics and maybe originally from Ireland - but thats just family hearsay.

Not sure.  Thought it was 1911 Census but was given that info from someone so not sure how good that is.

I'm looking for a Sarah Goddard who I believe married someone with the initials F. R. in 1794.

No other details but would like assistance or help to trace her.

Think she might be English

I'd love to take it to a British Museum but I'm in Australia and they are not too flash on samplers.  Might just have to look out for a Sarah Goddard around 1794  - it must be an important date for her and F. R.

She was Sarah Goddard and she married someone with initials F. R.  Can't imagine how I can trace her without a new married name.  She must have married in 1794 or it wouldn't be on her sampler.
