Thank you everyone who has contributed.
I must learn to look at all the evidence.  On Alice and Percy Frederick's marriage certificate the witness's are Percy W Brown and Betsy Brown the very same people living in 85 Southwold Mansions.  And Alice did put her name as Alicia in the 1921 census and it is her as she was born in Sneinton Nottingham so it must be her.

Yes I know that is what you meant thank you so much for your help. I did start to look further a field on your suggestion.

Head is Mary Ann Bickle, born 1859.
Yes this must be her as she was born in Sneinton, Nottingham.  Thanks for solving my mystery, although how she ended up living at 85 Southwold Mansions when she married.  And I still do not know who Joan Veronica is!!  But she is not on my tree so I can put her on the back burner.
Also we have solved a family mystery of who the mysterious Mrs Brown was!!

I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick CaroleW.  I know that Joan Veronica Brown did not marry anyone.  And I know she could not have been the daughter to either Percy Wilfred Brown or Betsy Brown nee Slack as she is too old.

But could they have made the name up.  And if so why.

Yes I agree it could be a distant relative but 'daughter' is stated on the census so I am assuming she means Percy Wilfred was her father and she insinuates that Betsy is the mother.  In red it states both alive. 
I am open to suggestions though and will certainly look abroad just in case.  Thanks

If she married Percy Frederick May - why are you referring to Percy Wilfred Brown not being previously married?

Percy Wilfred Brown could have been married previously and had a daughter Joan Veronica. 

I am not saying Alice is Joan just that they made up a name for the census. 
I am not saying I am right just that it seems a coincidence that I cannot find a Joan Veronica Brown anywhere on any of the ancestry sites.  And when Alice married Percy Frederick May she states she was living at 85 Southwold mansions which just happens to be where the Browns were living.

I have been searching for my partners grand mother in the 1921 census and she is not there.  Alice Elizabeth Sands Thorpe was born in Nottingham 1898 her mother was Kate Thorpe, she was illegitimate.  She was brought up by her grandfather George William Thorpe.  In 1921 she married Percy Frederick May.  She was living at 85 Southwold Mansions, Wildley Road Paddington. 
I thought I would try looking at that address on the 1921 census, living at that address is a Percy Wilfred Brown (School teacher) aged 35 and a Betsy Brown formally Slack, wife, aged 22.  There is also a daughter Joan Veronica Brown aged 11 born Isleworth Middlesex.  Now Joan cannot be Betsy's daughter and Percy was not married before as far as I can tell.  I have searched for Joan but there is no one of that name anywhere.
My partners father was always talking about a Mrs Brown who would visit his mother Alice, and Betsy was also born in Nottingham and they were a similar age. 
How feasible is it that Alice is in fact Joan Veronica Brown?  It just seems too much of a coincidence that I cannot find Alice in the 1921 census and yet she states when she marries in 1921 that she was living in the same address as the Browns.  Any suggestions please.

Have failed to find the Marchants on ships lists, but as the son Charles James Marchant was only 14 when his mother died in India where was he?  Perhaps the 1921 census will help.

Yes I did find the info on jockeypedia very interesting.  In 1911 he was with his sister living at their grandmothers, so yes it will be interesting to see the 1921 census I am quite excited about it.  This has been a very interesting line to follow, as Charles Marchant was born in Eastbourne where I now live and also he was in the Springfield asylum in Wandsworth and I used to drive past it with my parents to visit my nan, I was always fascinated by it and a little scared.

Re passenger lists from UK to India, bear in mind that many people preferred the quicker overland route by cross-channel ferry and train across France/Italy to a Mediterranean port, joining ship there. They won't appear on UK passenger lists.
