thank you Nick, I will follow that up.  And thank you Helen.  I tried to send you a photo too, but could not make it work.  I am not at home at the moment, but will use the personal message system to see if i can send it to you, and would love to see yours.  I sent on the info to my mother and she was absolutely thrilled

Nick, how would I access that tree with Walter in it?  Is it through rootschat?  sorry to be thick.  i did like the way you spelt his name "swaller", my mother tells the story of being chastised at school for pronouncing her name that way!

thank you all so much for all this information, especially Helen for that marriage and the children.  I have lots of leads to follow up, excellent.  My parents were just talking about Julia the other day, one of the last conversations she and my father had was regarding the suitability of Eisenhower for the presidency, they didnt see her after 1952.  Howard Swallow, her nephew, was my grandfather, and I cant help but think that she named her eldest son after him.  Howard was her oldest sister's illegitimate child, and was about 12 when Julia went to the U.S.  She offered to take him with her, Walter and Frank were already settled there, but Jane (Howard's mother) wouldnt let him go.  Thank you all so much, my parents will be thrilled to know that she married and had children -- they obviously never discussed so prosaic matters, politics being so much more riveting.

Europe / USA: Walter Swallow assistance please
« on: Tuesday 23 December 08 07:04 GMT (UK)  »
Walter Swallow went to New York as a single man in 1904.  He went again in 1907, but this time as a married man with his wife Ellen Swallow -- by then they were living in 3rd Avenue New York (from the Ellis Island site).  I am not sure I can find a marriage for him in England, and in 1907 they had both been in the US before for several years.  Can anyone tell me if he arrived in Britain with a wife?  I imagine he was just visiting, and may well have come in 1907.
thanks
Diane

Dear Bryant, what a gem you are.  I had seen that death for Sarah and thought that must be her, it is great to have some confirmation because i did get so confused that i wondered what was going on.  I am in Oz, and wrote the details to my uncle who is keen too, as he is in england and i thought he might get the cert, but if he has he is not letting the rest of us know.
According to the grandson of the second wife, who lives in Canada, Frederick married a Rachel Spinks, but since the first child was born in 1904, and he used the name Rouse as his surname, it is all a bit confusing.  I suspect he never married her, but then I have no idea how you might investigate divorces at that time, i guess they happened.
We are off to europe on friday for an extended stay, but i have the death cert details in my notebook, will get to england before the end of the year and have lots of questions for a couple of uncles!
thanks so much for your assistance

Thanks Bryant.  I think i found those, and it is spooky because my grandmother's name was winifred beatrice. I will look a bit further.

I continue to be amazed, I have never heard of RAGK, but it is just the sort of thing that goes on.  How amazing your father knew Walter Swallow.  The world does seem to be getting smaller and smaller.  and thank you so much for your kindness.  The website seems to have been down lately, but thankfully back up again.
