thank you so much for your reply. johns family were still living in edinburgh in 1841 and i think john was possibly aboard a ship called the ss grange in the 1850's. i just have a feeling there was other family in newcastle and what is interesting about your info is that James mckenzie cowan ,Isabella's son was born in West gate in 1854. it seems too much of a coincidence especially as john had a sister called margaret and and a brother called James.this family really seems too interesting not to follow up.I'm forward to the Irish Church records coming on-line, it would be lovely to find Isabella. [she's like an itch you can't find or scratch!!!]
thanks again for your help. i will post a reply if i find anything.
very best wishes. hazel

I wonder if any one has any idea how i would trace a birth in Dublin in the 1850's. I have a ggreatgrandmother born in 1823 in Dublin who travels between Ireland , Newcastle upon Tyne and Liverpool where she finally settled. I can find nothing other than her name on two of her childrens birth certs one b1854 in newcastle and another in 1867 in Liverpool. Her other son was born in Dublin according to all the census records. Her husband,[ John Cowan] was born in Edinburgh and was possibly at sea.Does anybody know of a necastle/ Dublin link or why she would travel back and forth. Does anybody have any clues how i can find her?I would be grateful for any help or ideas....she is my huge great big brick wall!!! Thank you for reading my message. Hazel
