The Lighter Side / Re: Paper trails and decades of research, what is the point?
« on: Friday 02 September 22 22:28 BST (UK)  »
I would be more worried if I found out that my 6 x great Grandfather was not related to me in a DNA test as it would potentially mean a complete rehash of the whole tree - not that I can go back that far unfortunately - my GGG grandfather was born in Ireland around 1785 and there are no online records before 1800 in Ireland (or at least the part I would be interested in) - sob!
Mind you I understand the doubt - I must do a DNA test just to see if my parents held anything back from me - or to confirm the Hospital did not mix up babies back in 1959!

The Lighter Side / Re: Can we erase the past .... or should we learn from it ?

Personally I am sick of the whole thing. It is not acceptable for us non-black people to use the n****r word, but it is okay for them to call each other that, and it is ok for them to call some of us white n****rs. Todays society needs to grow a pair.
This whole BLM thing going on now is, as far as I am concerned racist since it suggests the lives of people of any other colour do not matter. Yet the  mainstream media push it

The Common Room / Re: George Starling inconsistencies - what is your view?
« on: Friday 19 June 20 18:50 BST (UK)  »
Iolaus,
Yes it is his Birthdate (he was baptized in May 1881).
Indeed the earlier George was who I originally had as the father before getting the story of the French Grandmother from Mum. When backtracking I realized I had not checked his Birth record properly and being registered in Q3 was definitely not my relative (sadly I then had to clear out another 355 relatives from my tree as a result - hopefully I have learned from that!!)
Cheers

The Common Room / George Starling inconsistencies - what is your view?
« on: Friday 19 June 20 16:09 BST (UK)  »
My maternal Great Grandfather was George William Starling who married lilian Louisa Orford in 1900.
My mother had a photo (well, ambrotype actually - on glass) which I now have, which was of her G G Grandmother - a French lady named Celementine Filis
I found the marriage of Clementine to Thomas William Starling easily and then found the Birth of George in Q1 1880.
All seems fine here, but as I delve down, inconsistencies start appearing...

1) The marriage of George William to Louisa Orford identified his father as George William not Thomas William
2) The baptism record identifies a Birth date of 15th December 1880 for George
3) The family Bible lists a Birth date of 14th November 1880 for George (though this was written by my Grandmother around the age 14, as the two youngest members of the family are not listed)

4) Between Q4 1880 and Q1 1881 there is only 1 George Starling registered - to Thomas and Clementine
5) The only father and son combination of George William & George William (in the London/Essex areas) has the younger registered as Q3 1880 which is too early
6)1901 census lists George with Thomas and Clementine and lists him as single
1901 also lists George (as William) living with Lilian Louisa next door to her parents

Based on my mothers and Grand mothers views, I believe this is the correct family line, but what are the odds that the marriage registrar wrote down the Grooms name under fathers name, Nan would get her dads birthday wrong and Thomas or Clementine forgot their son had been married 6 months (I can understand them listing him as living there, as there are multiple occurrences of the same thing throughout my tree)?

London and Middlesex / Re: London Underground Employment records 1930s to 1970s
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Gerry
On Ancestry there is a staff register, but only goes up to 1931

I think the information may be available on the Transport for London site - but the info is not online and it also looks to be separated into the specific underground lines...

World War Two / Re: RAF personal on no records
« on: Sunday 23 December 18 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
There are the following records on the Forces War Records site - my subscription for this has lapsed so I cannot look at the actual records themselves, just the search screen...
N  Dawson   Temporary Flight Lieutenant  1943  Administrative And Special Duties...
N J  Dawson   War Substantive Flying Officer  1942  Administrative And Special Duties...

Are you sure the service number is correct? I did a search just on this number (1496031) in FindMyPast and it came back with a record for a W. Tomlinson-Boyce?

World War Two / Re: Bernard William Arthur Todd - The Buffs East Kent
« on: Wednesday 19 December 18 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
Solidrock

Yes - Bernard married Margaret Leppard in Q3 1946 (Vol: 5C Page: 2825)
Daughter Penelope T A Todd Born 1947 Chelsea (Vol: 5c Page: 475) - (no birth cert. to confirm this is correct)

Penelope married Harry Lancley Q1 1971 Croydon (Vol 5a Page 1423)

Interestingly, I have just done a search for Lancley births with mothers name Todd between 1960 & 2000 on Ancestry (used FindMyPast yesterday) - comes up with several names (but same search is only returning 1 record on FindMyPast!!!). Includes a Conna Louise 1980, Crawley - which I believe will be the Donna Louise I emailed yesterday.
Cheers
