Thanks Margaret, didn't think of approaching the register office. Will give it a go..

Unfortunately, so far it seems that all the possible marriages that I have tried have not been transcribed to Lancashirebmd....

Had a further reply from Bury Archives which wasn't as promising as hoped. Turns out they need to know the church where the marriage took place in order to be able to help - The marriage records for the 1970s are still held by the churches....

Further update. As the death certificate didn't provide any details for my birth mother, I contacted Bury Archives through the online system.  They have come back to me with the index references for 3 possible matches for marriages.   I'm now working on narrowing these down as the Archives offered to do a parish records search for me which is a great help!

Thanks for the help with the death details of Mary.

We received the death certificate for Mary today which is a match. The informant was her son....

The wonders of Rootschat!

Margaret - the Will & Grant records the probate search produced are for the 1999 death of John. The death certificate dates and details do match. Although the length of the probate is strange..

Did check for the burial of John but Bury records of graves are not yet online. Will look at Manchester though...

Dawn - it is the correct death entry,  thank you! The age is correct, she was 33 when they married in October 1950. Certificate ordered!

Thank you for the above, we looked further into the date suggested for Mary's death and found a reference to the death at the church where Mary and John married.

We have searched on Ancestry but have been unable to find anything further for the death so we don't have the GRO reference number to order the Death Certificate.

Is there any other way to source the death record?

The addresses seem to be for John...

The will name means nothing but is the same street as John at his death..

Thanks for the info; I hadn't spotted that on Ancestry as we're still a bit overwhelmed with the search so far. Definitely useful when we start going backwards a bit more!
