Can anyone enlighten me as to whether a Carte Postale would only be used in France? My grandfather was too young for WW1, being born in 1906, so I really donít know where France would come in. He did serve in Palestine in the 1920ís.

Not sure if You have the original Photograph, or just the copy on Your Phone. If You have the original, then shining Ultra Violet Light, on the spot, might reveal the faint writing.

Thank you. Yes I have the original.

Japeflakes I have darkened it, I can definitely see a number. Maybe itís a service number at the very top in the correspondence portion. I think I may be asking the impossible here, but Iíve only just noticed it and iíve had the photo for years.

Hi. I have a photo of my grandfather, Joseph Rigby, 9th Lancers, dated about 1920, on a carte postale. On the reverse side to the left, is very feint writing which is only visible when the image is darkened. As I only have the technology of my phone, I was wondering if anyone could make it more readable. I understand if itís not possible. Also was the carte postale only used in France? Many thanks as always.

John Thomas Hirst was the first child of Edward Kay and Margaret Ann Hirst, born before they married.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have since found an army enlistment document for her brother James Wallace Kay for 1885. In it he lists his brother John Thomas Hirst as next of kin living at 8 Simpson St. So giving the same time frame obviously Alice Ann was living with her brother. Thanks again.

I take it that is the address on both birth certificates?

Maybe she wasn't living alone but lodging with a family at that address  :-\

Thanks. Yes that was the address given on both certificates.
