Do a Google search for Mary Turner BOULTER and many references will appear. It seems her will became some kind of legal test case and, while she died in 1866, the estate was not finalised until 1945! Many court cases between her son Uriah and his children re the estate. Mary owned a great deal of real estate in the centre of Sydney. Unfortunately the family frittered it away and what came down to me was 10 percent of stuff all!

Hi James, thanks for your message. It looks like I might be bashing through this wall for quite some time. One of the reasons the Turner/Boulter line intrigues me is that there are some colourful characters (perhaps vindictive would be a better word!). As an example, Mary (mother of Uriah Turner BOULTER) put the attached notice in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1845 about her own sister!

FWH Stewart was born in Abbotsford, Victoria, Australia in 1873. His father Frederick James Stewart (1828-1889) was born in Gosport, Hampshire, England and died in St. Kilda, Victoria on 17th March 1889.

Thank you Jamjar & chempat. It looks like Habens and Harlen in the '41 and '51 censuses are the same family. I know many names were very common but the fact that Mary Ann had a daughter with a middle name of Joanna might indicate she was named after an aunt perhaps? If I can tie in Joanna HAYTER with Mary Ann HABENS (nee Hayter) that would be great.

Yes, Jamjar, Joanna HAYTER did marry James STEWART in Feb 1828. Thanks again.

I am trying to find detail on the family (parents and siblings) of Mary Ann HAYTER who married Matthew HABENS in 1834. I imagine that she was probably born around 1810 or so given the marriage date. Mary Ann and Matthew's son was William James HABENS (1839-1899) http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/2h1/habens-william-james

My paternal grandfather's name was Frederick Willian Habens STEWART and FWH Stewart's grandmother was Joanna HAYTER (dob unknown but likely around 1800-1810). I am thinking there may be a family connection particularly as my grandfather moved for a short time from Australia to New Zealand very soon after William HABENS' death. Any help with the HAYTER connection would be appreciated.

Australia / BOULTER descendants?
« on: Thursday 07 July 16 04:13 BST (UK)  »
There is in my family tree an intriguing character (at least to me) about whom I would like to find more detail. Uriah Turner BOULTER (1824-1896) is my GGGrandfather. Any internet search of his name will come up with many references to Uriah's mother's will which seems to be something of a notorious case! If there is anybody in Australia who might also have Uriah as an ancestor and knows anything about him I would be interested in what you know. Possible surnames of descendants (at least to the level of his grandchildren) might include HANSHAW, DEAN and SUTTON. The Boulter male line died out with the death of Uriah's son William Frederick Henry in 1945.

In an attempt to break through a thick brick wall I am following any possible lead, however tenuous. Working on the principle that names carry down through generations I have discovered a few possible connections. The strongest to date is a TURNER family in Monckton-Deverill listed here https://sites.google.com/site/nilsengenealogy/Home/turner
My ancestor Mary Boulter (nee Turner) it seems had a sister named Esther (or Hester) and a son named Uriah Turner BOULTER. Mary's son may have been named after his uncle Uriah perhaps. Mary's birth would have been in the 1790s so could well match with this family. According to her death certificate she was born in Wiltshire.

I have also found an entry on the 'Net of a William Uriah Turner HANCOCK. (b. 1904 in Bath, Somerset). He married Irene Janet DENNIS in 1935 and he died in 1966. Is it possible that the name "Uriah Turner" has passed down through generations of family? William U. T. Hancock may be in the living memory of somebody out there that maybe able to help.

If anybody has any news of a person with "Uriah Turner" somewhere in their name any lead would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everybody for your help so far!

Debra, I knew about the caution from Mary Boulter but I wasn't aware of the family connection and that they might be sisters. Mary did have other family but I don't know if they were actually in Australia (though I think that is possible). In her will, which seems to be a bit of a legal test case she says "to Charles Turner, my nephew, £100 cash." Of Charles I know no more.

There are no details of Elizabeth's parents on the marriage certificate. Details of her parents only appear on her death certificate (1907). From the death certificate she had resided in New South Wales for 60 years which would make 1847 as the year she moved to Australia. I have had no luck finding any other details.

Elizabeth's father died pre 1880. For him to be mentioned in his grand-daughter's marriage notice I can only assume that he was a fairly well known character in the colony. I can find no reference to his death in NSW so it is possible that he moved elsewhere with his regiment, perhaps even to another country.
