I shall do my best to get a timeline together..... I have had a breakthrough..... I have found  a living relative from the Huttons (Isabella - Mrs Rankin - Inde record) and she has told me that their family believe robert & janet eloped! she is away at present but has papers that she will look into in a month when she is home from her family visit.... Looking positive though to pinpoint a date!

She also gave me an address she believes they are at in 1861 2 Everton Street BUT number 2 doesn't exist I have scoured the census in was its an addendum as an empty house and added as a note etc but nothing  :'(

I shall collate a timeline as soon as possible.

Thank you to you all for your help and advice. It is most generous of you all to have offered your time. I will get back with that timeline ASAP  :-*

Yes isabella is her sister. I have researched the black and nothing I have census searched the address again with nothing but he is definitely My Robert as I have traced his ships from leaving the Inde right through to his death in Liverpool. I have traced Isabella McLauren Hutton who became Mrs Rankin and she disappears from scotland at same time as Janet and appear in liverpool at the same time as Janet.

I have Scotlands People credits I shall look at that census now.... I had missed that  :o

Do you have any census data for Janet/Robert?

I don't have them together ever. I have them pre children separately & only post Roberts death with Janet as a widow.

All addresses on birth records are basements of houses in poor areas then after Robert snr dies eldest son Robert is signed up to the Indefatigable, James McCall Mark is with Janet until she dies and I have the same address on the Death Cert as last census in 1888 which is 65 Christian Street death certificate states she is the Widow of Robert Mark Painter and James was informant.

I have been stuck here for months and I have tried every subscribed site I can, bought all of the birth certificates and despite having new addresses they are never at the address at census time and just appear to vanish but I can't figure out if its my poor skill or they didn't want to be noticed fro whatever reason.

Sadly there is nobody living in that line that I can probe for clues I have literally spent days in research archives getting this far to have hit this wall. So frustrating!

Only have Janets and she has two baptisms one is Scotland Select and then when in 1866 she is re-baptised as SFX same year as the children. I am completely confused by it. I am certain it is her as I have the boys birth certificates, I am waiting on daughters... On Birth Certificates it is again indicated that Janet Mark was formerly Hutton and so I am assuming still that they must have been married somewhere.... theres just no proof of it anywhere.

I am starting to think I am going mad  :o

Robert Mark senior I should say. Robert Mark jnr I've traced via Indefatigable & visiting maritime archives and tracking his merchant life. All records refer to his father as Robert Mark painer & journeyman b Scotland. I've scoured Scotland's People to no avail too.

I just feel if I find his marriage to Janet Hutton ill find some good evidence to take me back but there's nothing at alleged at churches of bpt.

Yes they are the Catholic bpt's! And also her parents!!

They were also bpt Coe with same info previously to those.

I'm completely confused say the reason for two bpt... Yet still no firm marriage.

I have managed to trace Janet from an 1871 record when her eldest son joins the Indefatigable but Robert Mark is proving impossible.

Is there a record of marriages I may be missing if theirs was a declaration?

Good Evening All,

Firstly I hope that I am posting in the correct place for my query. Apologies for any novice errors.

I have become quite stuck in my ancestry research. I have traced back to my 3rd Great Grandparents on the paternal side but I seem to have hit a complete wall here.

I Know they were Janet Hutton (Charwoman) B 1829 in Kirkcudbright & Robert Mark Painter) B 1828 Garlustown I have birth & baptism records for their children and they list Janet as Janet Mark (olim Hutton & formerly Hutton) and on census Janet states that she is married and then widow of Robert Mark Painter (Journeyman) BUT I cannot find for love nor money a marriage either in Liverpool or in Scotland for them. All I have are birth certificates & Church Records as they also seem to dodge census records. The addresses I have are basements of houses and research indicates that it was quite a poor life to live.

They are a tragic family and the story looks like Janet lost her husband, her daughter and then her eldest son was sent or placed on the indefatigable in 1871, and I have traced his life right through from there. I am just struggling to piece together life for Janet. I am hoping that somebody may have come across this before and may have experience of irregular marriages as perhaps this might explain why theres seemingly no official records.

I may indeed be completely wrong as I have only been researching for a year and so am probably lacking in skill too.

Thank you for your time reading this  :)
