Many text only records on Ancestry are from the Mormon indexes i.e. what is on familysearch. Ancestry and Findmypast have different contracts with different county archives to digitize and index their records.

The Common Room / Re: HS2 and Cemeteries
« on: Sunday 14 April 24 17:27 BST (UK)  »
I can't comment on HS2 being a vanity project, or the politics involved, and I do appreciate that it is very disruptive for those in its path. But we also need to upgrade our rail network and other infrastructure projects; the trouble is that we have so little space not already in use or beloved for some other reason.
We could have 'upgraded' (rather than added to) our network by improving the Euston to Birmingham line, for much less outlay than HS2 calls for.  More of the route was quadruple back in the 1950s ; parts were later reduced to double, and 20-30 years ago some were put back to quadruple to relieve congestion.  Spending billions for another (only partially separate) route just to save 10 or 15 minutes on a relatively short journey gives very poor value for money.  That is why it is called a Vanity Project, as much of its political value is to show that we can imitate the French - who have rather more space to do it in.

As things stand, HS2 will not even reach an existing terminus (unlike HS1) and trains will end in west London somewhere near Ealing.  And of course it will have only negative benefit for those disrupted by its passage nearby, as they can't use it - no stations !
Have just been catching up with the 3 part series 'Britain's Biggest Dig' on BBC TWO, am I right in thinking that the HS2 terminus will no longer be at Euston, will they turn it back into a park again I wonder :o?! There was an exhibition about the people of the cemetery at St. James' Piccadilly last year, you can see some description and a little video on it below, it says the exhibition transferred to Camden, but not sure where exactly

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Could the Golden Age of DNA Testing Be Over?

I thought the chart from Leah Larkin was interesting and certainly resonates with my experience.  Its an interesting business thats for sure!!
Interesting to note the notable slowing when the pandemic hit. I fully expect 23andme to slow drastically if not decrease given its bad press re: the database 'hacking' (although not I think specifically hacking), but Ancestry seems to be doing OK since the pandemic ended. Possibly MyHeritage and Ancestry, even LivingDNA will all benefit from customers who would otherwise have gone to 23andme.

The Common Room / Re: WolfieSmith- Does anyone know where to find them?
« on: Saturday 30 March 24 21:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all!
@WolfieSmith is a user on this very site, and it appears they haven't been on for a couple years. If any of you know a way to contact them, I would be very grateful. I believe I have a piece for their family tree, and they have a piece for mine.

You can also send PM (personal message) via their profile and they should get an email.

When was this, I think they have just added several new features to it?

I just logged into USA site this morning but cannot see any new features listed in the ProTools subscription page. Have you subscribed?
No not yet. I checked the original video from Ancestry, and they say the new features will be coming in the first half of 2024, so probably haven't been added yet. For ProTools, they will be

https://youtu.be/Q7QAJjYtXLU?t=460

1. You will be able to see how much your shared matches share with other matches, which will be very useful (and of course already possible in the other sites)
2. Ability to group all shared matches into one group with one click.
3. Ability to sort shared matches by matches' closest matches.
4. Highlight matches that have triangulated shared segments (also already possible in the other sites)

Regarding 'keep off the grass', a reference to a grass widow maybe?

I assume the logic is, £12000 a year was a rather huge sum of money back then, at a minimum £631,900 but practically several million a year. So, I think the Mail was saying suitors should keep away and not encourage her to marry, or she'd lose her fortune :o!

Just been on Chat with Ancestry, the staff do not know when the Roll Out will be.

Just USA members have Pro Tools access at present, which personally I do not mind, best to let them be the Beta Testers.

I signed up to Pro Tools for a month to see if it was any good.  You just need to log in with your UK account on the dot com website.  It will leave you log in and have it.

I did not see it worth the money, as there are other tools like FTAnalyser that will do the same and for free.

I found the Ancestry tool tried to say I had duplicate entries on my tree, even though they were not duplicates.  They were simular names with silular DOB.

I fed back to Ancestry what I felt of their Pro Tools and they did refund me the $10. which was around £7.
