More good ideas for me to follow, especially Farqhuar families in Galston, which I gather is not too far from New Cumnock.  Suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you both for your time and comments. I also thought that Hugh Farqhuar and Jane Gemmell were the likely parents of Hugh, born c 1720.
The possibilty of John Wilson and Jean Wight being the parents of Hugh's wife Jean is intriguing. The first two children of Hugh and Jean were John and Jean. Were they named after their maternal grandparents ?
Was there a usual practice of naming children in a certain order? For example, was first born son named after father's father and first daughter after mother's mother.

I am researching my ancestors Hugh Farqhuar and Jean Wilson, who I believe married c 1750. They had 3 children, John, Jean and William, who were born at Riggfoot farm, 3 km from New Cumnock Ayrshire Scotland 1751-1755. It is proving difficult to trace further back from both Hugh Farqhuar and Jean Wilson as there are so many family branches apparent online.

Tipperary / Catherine Murray married to Patrick Cummins c 1800

I am interested in the couple Catherine Murray and Patrick Cummins, who had 4 children baptized in the Holycross Parish 1799- 1808.
Their son, Lawrence Cummins married Mary Keogh and migrated to NSW in 1841.

Any insight to the family of Catherine Murray would be very welcome.

Hello again

I just found the reference to the marriage of Jeremiah Donovan and Mary Sly in the Ireland, Diocesan and Prerogative Marriage License Bonds Indexes, 1623-1866 from National Archives of Ireland in Family Search.

Thank you for the reply. I shall keep looking.

I originally found reference to the Donovan/Sly marriage in Family Search- 1815 Diocese of Ossory, Leinster, Ireland . I don't seem to be now able to replicate that search.  I now realize that the area may have been in Kilkenny and perhaps I am looking in the wrong places. I had thought that the Kilkenny area was not far from Wexford. I am still struggling to differentiate the different Townlands and Counties etc.

I am seeking information on the SLY family living in the Enniscorthy area Wexford c 1800. 6 people of the Sly family claimed damages from the Government for damages incurred during the 1798 Rebellion at Enniscorthy. My ancestor, Mary Sly, married Jeremiah DONOVAN in Leinster in 1815.
I am assuming that the Sly family were protestant, as they supported the British.

Thank you all for your information. I am obviously still learning how to use the National Archives IRE as I had missed the two papers - relating to Edmund Costello the father and the apparent married names of the sisters. Such gold for me to continue the search.

I have read a number of sources on the Holycross murder, including that from Hidden Tipperary. They raise another query for me re the father of the Keogh boys involved. Some references give his name as Tom and others Jack. I would have thought Jack = John, as not sure what the correct name is. My ancestor was Mary Keogh, born c 1810 (married Laurence Cummins) in Tipperary and her parents were Thomas Keogh, in the Holycross area, and Catherine Costello, who some think was Kate Costello's aunt.

Such a fascinating detective hunt and I really appreciate your work.

Regards, and stay safe

Margaret
