Worcestershire / Re: Mystery Pub
« on: Yesterday at 08:22 »
Looking at a map of Hanbury published in 1884 there is a  pub called The Cock Inn
I've tried to include a section of the map showing this but without success. However the map can be viewed at the National Library of Scotland website.  Map is Worcestershire XXX. NW.
Hope this helps

Can anyone help me  with regard to the following. I cannot make out the second location (Between Stavros and Mudros(?) I'm assuming he drowned at sea, perhaps aboard a troop ship but I can't find any reference on the internet. If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.

Armed Forces / Was he a deserter?
« on: Wednesday 13 April 22 16:52 BST (UK)  »
I am looking to find out whether an ancestor was court martialled for desertion. His name was William Groves bn. 1901 in Birmingham. He was posted as a deserter on 11/5/1921 whilst serving with the Worcester Regiment. His service number was 5241748. He was arrested at his home address for desertion alongside his wife who was arrested for theft of money from a grocery shop. He subsequently escaped from the lock up and was re-arrested after a chase. He and his wife appeared in court where she pleaded guilty. He was given 2 years imprisonment but the newspaper article doesn't make it clear if this was for theft or desertion. Fold 3 says he was dismissed from the service after civil court proceedings. Is there any way I can check if he ever did stand trial for the desertion. Any help would be gratefully appreciated

The Common Room / Re: Looking for a SHOW

There is a record on Ancestry for S.Levin, birth date 1860,  emigrating aboard a ship named Bothnia bound for New York on 20th May 1890. A simple transcription error may have resulted in his surname being recorded as Levin instead of Levein.

I have looked at the outgoing passenger list for the Bothnia and I read that name as S LEWIN
I have to admit I had extreme difficulty in reading any of the names on the list and couldn't find either Levin or Lewin. I was going on the Ancestry printed entry

Since I made my first appeal in 2017 I have a couple of possible clues as to the whereabouts of Show and his son.
There is a death recorded in September Qutr. 1889 for a Joseph Charles Levein Holt together with an entry in Birmingham burial/cremation records for a Joseph Holt in July 1889 at Yardley Cemetery.
It is my belief that Show Levein abandoned his wife and child for whatever reason and left the UK for America.

I am unable to check USA immigration/naturalisation records as I don't  have International subscription to Ancestry. is there anyone who could run a check for me.
I also have a theory that his marriage to Emily Chatfield was invalid possibly bigamous giving him a reason to abandon her and also for her to legally declare on both marriage certificates that she was a spinster but of this I have no proof whatsoever.
