But no trace of a GRO entry for Emma's birth?

I think the birth year is 1852, not 1842 - therefore Emma won't be on the 1851 Census.

Here she is on the 1861 Census:
1861 Census – 49 Commercial Road, Lambeth, Surrey
John Clare   Head   38   c.1823   Carman   Lancashire
Lydia Clare   Wife   38   c.1823      Lancashire
Emma Hughes   Niece   9   c.1852      Lancashire

Lydia Bryce (Emma's mother is Judith Bryce) married John Clare

Technical Help / Re: how do i remove my card details from find my past
« on: Thursday 25 January 24 22:56 GMT (UK)  »
You can't remove your card details, because FindMyPast don't keep them. They simply store a token which is linked to a secure payment gateway, (in this case Datacash) and the only way they can completely remove this is by disabling your account.

That's what I was told a few years ago when my membership was renewed, despite me unchecking the Auto Renew flag.

The Common Room / Re: Missing GRO Death - 1945
« on: Tuesday 23 January 24 06:23 GMT (UK)  »
If you've contacted the GRO and they won't update their database then you could add a postem to the corresponding FreeBMD entry. Perhaps a brief note for how to find it in the new GRO index and/or an explanation of what was recorded on the certificate.

The discussions pinned to the top of the Common Room includes one on postems and how to use them.

Postem already done for both freebmd entries. Also an amendment request to freebmd for the mistranscription by them of one of the pair.

Anyone coming through that route will be directed to the entry in GRO.

Thanks, Antony MMM - great to have your explanation.

I seem to remember you had an FOI with GRO on their conventions, etc? Did you hear anything?

My THIRD and last attempt to report this error (narrative in free text field repeated below):
"This is William Charles BUTLER - the surname is missing and the second forename has been used as the surname instead. I reported this as a missing entry twice - it obviously does not come up on a GRO search for BUTLER. Twice you said you have investigated and no amendment was necessary. It would be nice to understand what form your investigation took and why you stated twice that no amendment was necessary, when clearly this was incorrect."

Response from GRO:
"Investigated – Online Index entry updated" - there was no further GRO comment.

Clearly this is not updated as it still fails to show under BUTLER.

Death Certificate confirms:
When and Where Died. "Twenty seventh January 1945 22 Oaks Lane UD"
Name and Surname. "William Charles otherwise Charles William Butler"

Presumably, GRO has decided he was known as "Mr W Charles" or "Mr C W Butler" and has decided to index only under the former!   ::)

Thanks for the help in finding this - as I say, he's not my man!  :'(

The Common Room / Re: Eleanor Frances Butler, née Greene (1848 - unknown)

Yes, that's where I got the WWI dob from in my post.

His father in law worked on the buses - possibly got him the job on return from war, hence the rather unusual switch in careers. There's also a newspaper article about him being cautioned for stealing a newspaper - he was 70 and although interesting, does not help with identification.

Perhaps Charles South Butler's father, disclosed (or not) at marriage would confirm it? I can't find it on Ancestry?

I think I have found the son, Charles Butler.

In WWI, he is Charles Butler, born 31/12/1888 in Islington ("my" Charles Butler was 13/12/1888, Islington).
Charles S Butler marries Eva Stanton - GRO Reference: 1914 D Quarter in ISLINGTON Volume 01B Page 720
In 1921 (Census), he is Charles Butler, aged 32y 6m (makes him end of October 1888)
In 1939 (Register) he is Charles South-Butler, born 31/12/1888.
At death, CHARLES SOUTH BUTLER, GRO Reference: 1972 M Quarter in ISLINGTON Volume 05C Page 1871, dob 31/01/1889.

I can't find two Charles Butlers, registered in Islington 1888/89.  I can't find a reason for the "SOUTH" bit?  Possibly his biological father's name?

Armed Forces / Re: List of all Battle of Waterloo men - free lookup offer
« on: Thursday 18 January 24 11:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

With regard to my direct ancestor, John Shipman (b. Bridgnorth, c.1779; d. Friar Street, Bridgnorth, 22 November 1837), I have the 1816 23rd Regiment of Foot Register of Pensioners.  This has "Waterloo" written under many men's entries - but not his.  I also have his discharge papers showing service from 5 March 1798 to 24 September 1816 (as Sergeant, Corporal, Private) signed (in his own hand - matches his marriage register in 1803) on 10 September 1816.

Anything more would be very gratefully received.

Thank you.
