Antrim / Re: Marriage: McCormick-Darragh
« on: Saturday 12 March 16 03:55 GMT (UK)  »
I sure hope you still visit this Website, mikymc, in 2016!
My g-g-g-grandfather was Irishman Roger McCormick, who married Mary Darragh.
His son, my g-g-grandfather John McCormick (born circa 1840), relocated to Port Glasgow, Scotland. One of his children was Mary McCormick, my g-g-grandmother, born May 30, 1858.
I have more concurrent and later information.
Can we share?

Although I'm sure you would have mentioned it, did the death cert for Margaret Downie mention a place of birth?
I'm thinking that Margaret would have been of the same generation as my great-great-grandfather, John Downie, but his father was Robert Downie. Perhaps John and Margaret were cousins (and John a brother of Robert). My Downies also were Roman Catholic.
At any rate, thank you so much for keeping me in mind. If you ever get anything more specific on those Downie roots in Ireland, I'd appreciate the tip.

Of course I can give you dates---how forgetful of me!
John Downie (b. 1835) and Bridget McCurdy (b. 1836, of the Rathlin Island McCurdys) married in Cushendun, County Antrim, in 1855.
We don't have anything else on John's parents, Robert Downie and Margaret McGeachan, except that Robert was a soldier. We're assuming that they're about 20 years older, which would mean birthdates circa 1810?
Even if this doesn't lead to anything, thanks for following up! I do appreciate it.

Any more info on your Downie  from County Antrim? I'm researching my Downie ancestors, Robert Downie and Margaret McGeachan, parents of John Downie and Bridget McCurdy, whom I believe lived in that Irish county. The latter settled in Port Glasgow, Scotland. Any assistance would be so appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Aghadowey,
I don't understand your message about Downey/Downie being "locked to prevent duplication of searches and replies." Could you explain? Thanks.

Maybe you've seen my Downie posting from 2007, but maybe not. My earliest Downie ancestors were located somewhere in Northern Ireland in the early 1800s. My great-great-great-grandfather was Robert Downie, a soldier, who was married to Margaret McGeachan. Their son, John Downie (my great-great), married Bridget McCurdy in the mid-1800s in Cushendun County Antrim, Ireland, and later moved to Greenock, Scotland. One of their children, John Downie (my great-grandfather) married Mary  McCormick in 1881, down the road from Greenock in Port Glasgow.
I have other siblings' names and dates if any of this sound familiar. Please keep me in mind.

Hi,
As you do your research on McGeachans, please keep me in mind. My great-great-great-grandfather, Robert Downie of Ulster, married a Margaret McGeachan. Their son, John Downie and the rest of my Downie ancestors, settled in Scotland in Greenock and Port Glasgow. If you ever come across any Downie/McGeachan connections, please let me know.

Thanks, Gary, although even with my limited genealogical experience, I'm able to while away far too many hours.

By the way, I discovered www.ulsterancestry this morning and saw your conversation about "Katie." Hope something pans out.

I heard back from the priest at St. Michael's (Creeslough) about looking up O'Brian records. He directed me to Holy Cross Church (Dunfanaghy), so I guess that's my next stop. Have you pursued church records?
