New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: New Zealand BDM - alternatives?
« on: Friday 22 May 20 13:10 BST (UK)  »
That's great.
I will try that database.
I'm spoilt by the (Australian) BDM databases, even though they are incredibly dissimilar, and some (like Victorian BDM) have made a dog's breakfast of the so-called improvements. (after some months, it is about 90% back to how it was in early 2019). But most allow sufficient flexibility in searching.

Again, thank you.

New Zealand Completed Requests / New Zealand BDM - alternatives?
« on: Friday 22 May 20 05:41 BST (UK)  »
I have searched the NZ BDM records over the past 2-3 years, and also used Papers Past, and I am having problems finding deaths (specifically) that are in the papers, which i cannot locate in the BDM.

This may be my inexperience, but an example may help others give me advice.

I found in papers Past, the death of Elizabeth Ann Shackel, wife of Thomas Edmund Shackel, at Okain's Bay on 5 Sep 1882.
Searching for that death, with a date range 1/1/1880 to 1/1/1885, with variations of the surname only, found no persons at all.
The name variations I used were -
shackel
shackels
shackle
shackles
schackel
schackels
schackle
schackles

The newspaper article was as follows (first line only) -

INQUEST.
AKAROA MAIL AND BANKS PENINSULA ADVERTISER, VOLUME VII, ISSUE 642, 8 SEPTEMBER 1882

INQUEST.

An inquest was held yesterday at Mr Thacker's saw mill, Okain's Bay, on the body of a women named Elizabeth Ann Shackel, a resident in the Bay, .....

There may be alternative records for New Zealand BDM that I'm not aware of. I do search Find-A-Grave and Billion Graves, but I'm not familiar with church records; and i have not searched records in nearby cemeteries.

Any suggestions?

This is not the only "missing" record I would like to locate. Mainly, I am looking for LANDELLS and I am used to trying all the spelling variations (there are separate LANDELS families in NZ and Australia, and UK, that are not mis-spellings).

Very helpful, thx spades, for the last 2 posts. I will locate the PDF you suggested.

Addendum: Your man received the New Zealand War Medal, and has an entry in Stowers' New Zealand War Medal to Colonials (10th ed.) in the section devoted to Armed Constabulary personnel. p.18.

I can transcribe this for you if you don't have it.

spades, it would be useful to see the entry that you mentioned.

Hi spades, I have been taking a look at the database and there may be separate periods of service for Edward Douglas Landells - or some other explanation?

I searched, separately, for just the surname LANDELLS, then for just the surname DOUGLAS. 2 results in the first, 15 in the second search, but matching the E.D. Landells it seems that his service dates as 1868-1869 and 1864-1866.

http://lynly.gen.nz/WARDesertersL-Q.pdf
Have now downloaded that PDF - I have several Edward LANDELLS in my genealogy database, but none from Dumfries nor for the date range that would match the deserter's likely age.

Edward Douglas LANDELLS served in the NZ Armed Constabulary, Division 4,  commencing on               20 March1868 and ending 8 December 1869.
He served at  Nukumaru; Karaka; Otautu; Ahikereru

However, there is a second search result at the database (NZ Militia, Volunteers and Armed Constabulary of New Zealand 1863-1871), in 1863, for a person named Edward LANDELLS.

Armed Constabulary/Militia      Militia
Name                                    LANDELLS, Edward
Notes                                    desert.
Place of birth                         Dunfries
Tribe/County/Country             Dumfries
Service commenced               2.8.1863

Does the Note: desert. indicate a "deserter"?

I don't know of other NZ residents named Edward Landells at that time.

Correction for a link given by spades -

New Zealand Militia, Volunteers and Armed Constabulary 1863 to 1871
https://kintalkfamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2012/11/new-zealand-militia-volunteers-and.html

I haven't yet located Edward Douglas LANDELLS, but the site looks very useful.
[EDIT]
The article linked to above, mentioned the new merged database.
That database is at another location - the following is a search page, for the individuals that you may be looking for -
http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/armedconstab/armedconstabulary.html

I entered just his surname, Landells, and first name, Edward.
The result shows his information (and also, what seems to be his alternate surname, DOUGLAS)

There isn't a direct link to that result page (it fails, being the one that spades gave).

Hope this helps

Other Countries / Re: Samoa - Landells and Netzler
« on: Wednesday 15 April 20 02:09 BST (UK)  »
Sorry, I can't help at all on your search. I was not aware that he had a boat, "The Meg". Based on WJ Landells' business advertisements, I was guessing the year that he left Samoa for Australia (Queensland), but I will certainly look at Papers Past for 1919 onwards with more care.

Australia / Re: Edward George LANDELLS - whose son is he?

A FamilySearch tree for Edward George LANDELLS -
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L1J9-H5G
collates some of the information of his occupation and residences over time, obtained from the images of birth records of his children.
Also recorded there is his marriage on 22 March 1900 at Holy Trinity Church, Kalk Bay, Cape Town to Elizabeth Cutting.
Occupation: 1901 - stone mason; 1905 - stone cutter; 1909 - Police constable
Residences: 22 Mar 1900 - Kalk Bay, Cape Town; 1909 - Diep River, Cape Town

Not on that tree, but available on the images of the birth register for the children (at FamilySearch), are witness names that include Landells and Cutting.
