If possible I would head down to a place with scotlands people access for £15, and check each and every BMD to see what information is contained therein.

Also, where would an inmate be buried when they died?

Most probably Peebles St Andrews Cemetery, grave records will be with scottish borders council. Only a few families were allowed to be buried at the Cross Kirk by then, and they had money.

Heres a photo of it

but you need to bear in mind that it is possible that there was another Thomas of similar age but possibly a different spelling whose baptism record has not survived.

but that person may have a surviving marriage or death record, may appear in court or land records, census or militia records etc etc.

Its a case of research each and every one of them to eliminate them from the process.

I found a grandfather through a 1782 court record where it named his father, I had his marriage, death, various other court records, militia, books and a magazine article from 1822 but no positive birth until the 1782 court record (which had been mis-filed)

Selkirkshire / Re: Fell's of Lanarkshire who lived in Peeblesshire & Ashkirk, Selkirk

Only marked grave at Yarrow is

In loving memory of JAMES WILLIAM BYERS JOHNSTONE who died suddenly on
8th April 1996 aged 54yrs dearly loved husband of ROBINA TAIT FELL

She may actually still be alive, born 1944 in Lanark, married 1966 in Walston.

As Marion was born and died in Selkirk she could be buried in Selkirk Brierylaw, in which case email the council (Scottish Borders) and they will provide details of the lair number. I have a lair map somewhere.

I have the birth record for July 1777 for Dumfries but not August, that's how I know what info it contains. See attached.

This "were 2 William Moffats in Dumfries " should read "were at least 2 William Moffats in Dumfries" at this time

Dumfries archives webpage is here, its searchable, depending on the occupation he may appear in one of the trade minute books

Peeblesshire / Re: Veitch & Bryce - possible Peeblesshire connection

my husband's Mother was an Erskine. Funny to see both names there.  We were in Peebles in June and its a beautiful place.

The Erskines used to live at Venlaw Castle (now a hotel) in Peebles, which before that was Smithfield castle. http://venlaw.co.uk/p/3/History-of-Castle-Venlaw
The Erskines, the Hays (previous tenants at Smithfields) and the Earl of Weymess families have the right to be buried in the Cross Kirk in Peebles. The Hays are still buried there, the Erskine section is slightly overgrown.

Or the Militia List to see how many Robert Gibsons were in the town.
