Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with address in Neath, Please.
« on: Monday 19 April 10 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Coedffranc is on the outskirts of Neath/Skewen.  There was an iron works in that area of Neath owned by a Joseph Tregelles Price who was a Quaker. It may be that Quakers Bank was something to do with him?  In Neath town centre there is still a Quakers meeting house and burial ground. Hope this is of some help/interest :)

That's brilliant and does make sense - that part of the family were from Martinhoe! I'm heading down to Devon next week so want to see as many places of relevance as i can!

thanks,

yes The Green is where the cattle market is held, but the proper Mile End Row has been demolished.

As you head from Ynysmaerdy cemetry back into Neath you travel along the main road. The area where the Esso petrol station, Lidle & Castle Bingo are is where the old Mile End Row houses stood.  Right opposite the petrol station are some houses set back with a grass area in front of them and that was where the majority of the houses were.  It did run along past the Melin school, along where the flats are and up as far as the restraurant which i think is now called Taverna Paradiso (the building used to be the old Eaglesbush pub).

Just past the petrol station, opposite the school there is a mile stone set against the wall - hence the name Mile End Row.

Hope this is of some interest,

Delyth.

diolch yn fawr hanes teulu!  thanks :)

Its Combe Martin, Berrynarbor, Martinhoe, Parracombe, Challacombe & Kentisbury that I want to take a look at.

Its amazing that I've had more luck with this branch of the family than I've had with my Welsh family on my doorstep!

Good luck for your research trip.

thanks Cember, it will be worth bearing in mind the wednesday half-day, I'll have to work around it! I've now heard from someone else that virtually everything for north devon is in Barnstaple and that i shouldnt need to go to Exeter. Hope so, it will be so much easier.

Now all i need to find is a cheap B&B.........

Devon / Best place to look?
« on: Wednesday 24 March 10 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping to travel to Devon next week to do a bit of research after a long spell away from it.

My Brooks ancestors go back to the 1500s in Combe Martin so obviously i would like to go there for a look around but i do want to try to view some parish records etc while im there.

If i remember correctly there is a records office in Barnstaple? but would i be better off going to the main records office in Exeter?  someone once advised me i would be better off there as that is where the Bishops Transcripts are.  I'd be gratefull for any info or suggestions as to where my time would be best spent.

Also if anyone can say if either of these places are closed on particular days of the week and do i have to register in advance to be able to use the facilitiies there?

All help appreciated,

Delyth :)

« on: Monday 05 October 09 16:57 BST (UK)  »
Well i went today.  They only had a record of the 1851 marriage. Was told that the 1852 record may be in Caerphilly office or Pontypridd.  They couldnt do same day issue so have to wait, but the marriage they have is Ebenezer chapel ABERDARE!!  I'm going to be ambushing the postman every day till it arrives now! I'm not going to chase up the 1852 until this one arrives  :)
