World War One / 1918 Photograph of Royal Army Medical Corps England Football Team
« on: Tuesday 11 November 08 19:27 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather served in WW1 and was one of the lucky ones to come back home safely. I have in my possession a photograph to commemorate an international charity football match which was played between England (RAMC) and Scotland (RAMC). The match was played on 2nd January 1918 and the result was 1-1. The photograph is mounted on card and lists all the players. They were Monaghan, Bates, Moulson, Edge, Kinsella, Grice, Joseph Henry Southern, Ralphs, Lieutenant Stimson (Captain), Moorcroft and Eccleston. Others shown on the photo were their trainer (no name given), R. Rawcliff Esq, R. G. Barlow Esq and J. J. Lewis Esq. (Referee) - the photo was taken by a Blackpool photographer. This message has been posted to see if there's anyone out there who might be a descendant of one of these chaps and would like to see the photo  :D

Library and FHS Lookups / Belfast Newspaper Library - look up please
« on: Sunday 14 September 08 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Is there some kind person out there, who could look at some newspaper archives to see if my grand mother's inquest was published in a Belfast Newspaper? Her death certificate says she died on the 9th April 1940 in Belfast and her inquest was held by the Coroner for Belfast on 24th April 1940; she was only 20 when she died. I have written to the Public Records Office, however, they have confirmed that they cannot find the inquest file. I have emailed the Newspaper Library and they tell me that there were 4 newspapers in existence at the time : - Belfast Newsletter, Belfast Telegraph, Irish News and the Northern Whig. My last hope is that there will be something recorded in a newspaper from that time. Unfortunately, I don't live in Northern Ireland otherwise I would make the trip to the library myself.
Is there anyone out there who could advise me further or look up any possible newspaper archives??  :)

Antrim / Belfast Newspaper Lookup - Agnes Thompson Inquest 24th April 1940

Is there some kind person out there, who could look at some newspaper archives to see if my grand mother's inquest was published in a Belfast Newspaper? She died on the 9th April 1940 in Belfast and her inquest was held by the Coroner for Belfast on 24th April 1940. I have written to the Public Records Office, however, they have confirmed that they do not hold the inquest file. They have suggested contacting the North Ireland Court Service who may be able to help locate the post mortem records. I have a copy of the death certificate which was issued on the day of the inquest, so I don't think contacting the Court Service would achieve any more than the death certificate I already have. I assume that the inquest would have been reported in the newspaper, however, I'm not from Belfast and don't know which newspaper this would be - possibly the Belfast Telegraph??? Is there anyone out there who could advise me further or look up any possible newspaper archives??
Thank you  :)

Down / Re: Donaghadee - Herdstown - Rocin Cottage

Hi ddee,
Your post is very interesting and thank you very much for your reply. My grandmother, Agnes Thompson (nee Miskimmin) was born in 1919 - I'm still uncertain of the actual date as I need to send off a search form to Belfast Record Office. After studying the Donaghadee Parish grave photo and by sheer luck finding a picture of the headstone on http://www.yorick.plus.com/Donaghadee/index.htm, my grandmother's mothers name was Agnes Miskimmin (nee Bunting) - she was born in 1898. Then her mother was also called Agnes, Agnes Bunting (think her maiden name might have been Burns) - she was born in about 1875 but not too sure of this. Agnes Bunting's husband was called Thomas Bunting and he died in 1914 aged 38. Agnes Bunting was still alive in 1964 when my mum went over for a funeral - she thinks she died in the 1960's so she must have reached a grand old age. At the moment, I don't know the christian name of my grandmother's father but she had 4 sisters - Susie, Isabelle, Lila and Margaret. Please let me know if we're describing the same family.
Regards, Fran

Hi ddee,
Thank you very much for the info. Do you know, was Miskimmin quite an unusual name in Ireland or the Donaghadee area in the 19th century? My mum gave me a copy of the Donaghadee Parish magazine from June 1940 – she had it because it mentions her mother’s death and subsequent burial – her mother’s (maiden) name was Agnes Miskimmin. In the magazine, it gives details of collections made and is entitled “Sustentation Fund” and there are Miskimmins listed. Firstly, it says “Collected by Miss. Susie Miskimmin” (who was my grand mother’s sister) then underneath – “Hugh Miskimmin, Hogstown, 6 pence, Miss. S. Miskimmin, Hogstown, 6 pence, further down the list we have Mrs. Jas Miskimmin, Ballyvester, Ellen Miskimmin, Moat Street and Miss. E. Miskimmin, Manor Street”.
Can you tell me anymore about the 1820 Hugh Miskimmin of Ballycross or his descendants? After much searching, my mum’s just found a picture of her mother’s grave which is situated in Donaghadee Cemetery so I am making progress slowly!! I hope to visit in the not too distant future – it’s been 34 years since I was last there and we stopped at Herdstown, but we’ve still got family in Bangor.
Kind regards, Fran

Down / Donaghadee - Herdstown - Rocin Cottage
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 13:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
After spending time researching my father's side of the family and learning how to undertake family history research, I've just decided to start investigating my mother's side of the family which was not spoken about when her father was alive. He was a Thompson and lived in Herdstown at the time of his marriage (1938); his wife (maiden name Miskimmin) was from Hogstown. My grand father moved over to England in the early 1940's which is where he raised his family and where I'm writing from today. Is there anyone out there who remembers Rocin Cottage, Herdstown, Donaghadee or has Thompson, McClellands, Miskimmins or Buntings from Donaghadee in their family trees? ???
