Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Will in Latin
« on: Monday 23 September 24 00:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a couple of Wills from the 1600s for my Cavell ancestors which are written in Latin but I'm unable to read them. On one, I can make out some family names but not how they are connected to the testator Hugh Cavell or the date/year of the Will.

I've managed to get Hugh's Will into 3 small parts so each comply with the attachment quota.

Would somebody on RootsChat be able to help me if I attach one part at a time. I would be most appreciative.

Hi all,
It's been ages since I vivited this topic but I hadn't realized I had more replies as didn't get any notifications. I'm so sorry. I've attached the Hong Kong reference to James' death which was in his naval history.

Hi,
Thank you so much. I wondered if the last word was "weaver" but didn't know about the "Say" bit.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What Is The Occupation

Hi,

I was wondering if someone would be able to give me some help with this marriage record please?
I have Carnaby Strutt and Jane Wilson getting married in St Bride's Fleet Street, London. All the entries in the Register give an account of the spouse's occupation, place of abode. I can read the record but just can't fathom the last sentence which says Carnaby's occupation.

Thanking You,
Marj

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Sarah Poole 1835 Will
« on: Wednesday 01 March 23 23:53 GMT (UK)  »
John Cavell one of the trustees was the grandfather of Nurse Edith Cavell. His brother Henry Cavell married Jane Poole a daughter of Sarah Poole testator. Henry (East India Co) & Jane died young leaving Martha Abel nee Poole to raise their son Henry Theodore Cavell mentioned in the Will.

John & Henry Cavell were the brothers of my 3 x Gt Grandpa George Cavell. All born in Bawdsey, Suffolk. Sarah Poole (Testator) nee Strutt was the sister of my 4 x gt grandmother Mary Cavell nee Strutt - Mary Cavell was the mother of John, Henry & George and married to Corry Cavell of Ipswich, Suffolk.

This is why I was so interested in the Will of Sarah Poole and her children.

Hi everyone,

Thank you sooo much. I would never have thought it was a "J". The Robert Poole witness at Sarah's marriage was her older brother.

Warm regards,

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Sarah Poole 1835 Will

Hi,
I'd like to  ask for some assistance with the 1835 Will of my Sarah Poole of Old Kentish Town, Middlesex formally of Mendham Suffolk. She has left everything to 1) William - I can't work out his surname - of Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury - Ironmonger, 2) John Cavell of Greys Inn Place Middlesex - Law Stationer.

William is the husband of Sarah Poole's daughter Sarah who is also mentioned in the Will along with her sisters Harriet Aldous, Martha Abel, Mary Waller & Catherine Poole and grandson Henry Theodore Cavell.

I would be most grateful for any assistance offered in solving William's surname.
