Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Mourning brooch
« on: Sunday 26 December 21 14:46 GMT (UK)  »
This is a photo of a mourning brooch, it contains a loch of hair. It is small, only 2cm x1cm

On the reverse are initials which I can’t work out. I am hoping that someone will be able to decipher them.Thank you!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Almack Runaway bride
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 08:47 GMT (UK)  »
My friend's father and mother have passed away and he is very proud of the first photo that was ever taken of his parents. His mother was a runaway bride and literally the couple eloped on the back of a motorbike! This photograph was taken on the 4th October 1955.

I have a subscription to MyHeritage and have attempted to colourise the image myself. Unfortunately, something blips on the car bonnet and it comes up as a weird colour. I would love to be able to give a better colourised version of this image to my friend. Any help gratefully appreciated. Thank you

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / George Turnbull Gustard
« on: Sunday 16 May 21 11:22 BST (UK)  »
This is a very old scan and unfortunately I do not have the original. It is of my Gt Uncle George Turnbull Gustard (1906-1967). I have been told that it may have been taken when he was serving in Iraq, but I don't know. It is in very poor condition and I don't know if much can be done to repair it. I am just posting in the hope that it is possible. Thank you if anyone attempts it.

By all accounts he was a bit of a rogue and was literally forced at gunpoint by the brothers of the girl he had got in the family way to marry her. Later on after his father died and he took on the farm, he gamboled away all of the money and 'took the family to the door'. They lost everything, home and possessions. His mum borrowed money off her brother to repay the debts and she moved from Consett to London to be a housekeeper. She earned enough money to repay the debts with interest. As she began to fail in her old age, George reappeared and she apparently got off the bed and welcomed him like the prodigal son. He had a sister (my gran) but he had always been the favoured child, for example if there was an orange available he would be the one to get it.

Quite a character!

Armed Forces / How to find out if someone was a submariner
« on: Tuesday 25 August 20 14:12 BST (UK)  »
One of my friends has decided that he would like to find out if a story about his dad is true - that he was a submariner.

My friend did not grow up with his dad and many of  the stories he was told have subsequently turned out to be untruths. He died in 1989. His name was Raymond Marshal Pickles (19/12/1923).

Where do I need to look to find out if he was a submariner? There is no other information such as dates or places.

TIAx

Thank you, it is an interesting process seeing how the restorations and recolouring are done. Unfortunately I do not have the original. Best wishes Alison

Good morning
I would greatly appreciate it if someone would fix and colourise this photograph, it is not of a direct family member, rather it is the late sister (Cnota) of my sister in law's mother in law who has been missing her sister alot today.

I would also really like to learn how to colourise photos properly for myself and would appreciate suggestions of online courses where I could learn how to do it and what software to use. I have photomyne which is sometimes good but mostly rather hit and miss. For example I tried to colourise this photo and she ended up with burgandy lips and was sat on black grass!

Thank you in advance
