Providing this is the right one - John's death registration claims he was born approx 1829/1830 :

Death, Jun qtr 1908
John Nicholson, aged 78
Wetherby, Vol 9a, page 83

Malky's made a good job of taking the lines away !  :)

I would have thought a Corporation Drainer had something to do with Corporation Drainage ?

Do you have his occupation in any other census years?

 :-\

Pels.

I thin Pel's answer has been confirmed by Malky..."Corporation Drainer"....looking at other census returns may confirm it.

Hiya,
Yes, but already have the marriage, it's the death date of his wife and details of a boy child to them who died very young.
Regards,
Peter.

married 5 May 1840 Sheffield (I think her maiden name is Crookes but not sure) can you confirm for me

The problem is, sometimes to find other information you have to look at the whole picture.

And knowing the correct registration district is always a help.  :) :)

Which would be this one, as Peter already thought :

Marriage, 5th May 1840
James Scott
Mary Crookes
Ecclesfield, Yorkshire

Marriage, Jun qtr 1840
James Scott
Mary Crookes
Wortley, Vol 22, page 484

One worth noting

This is a bit earlier than the 1833 birth date you give but does tie more neatly with the 1828 given in 1901

Name: John Nicholson

 Christening Date: 10 Sep 1826
 Christening Place: WIGHILL,YORK,ENGLAND

 Father's Name: James Nicholson
 Mother's Name: Ellen

This looks like John Nicholson born Wighill and living in Rothwell, with his parents in 1851 :

HO107/2316, Folio 383, Page 21

When searching it's best not to include his year of birth.

Kind regards,

Pels.
