I don't see how the 1911 Leslie Baker could have been someone else, though, unless they were both from the same family anyway. .

Oh, and they'd both have to have the exact same birthday too  ;D

I have a definite birth date for the Leslie Baker born in 1911 (24 Jul),

Try 24 Jul 1906.

Debra  :)

Found him. He's living in Haltemprice, East Yorkshire with an inferred spouse named Margaret. The birth date and occupation match up, so I'm 99% sure it's him. I'm not sure why he continued with the false age. I don't see how the 1911 Leslie Baker could have been someone else, though, unless they were both from the same family anyway. A very confusing bunch.

Charles Holliday Baker himself is a little confusing, since he was born Charles Baker Holliday and he stayed that way for the first couple of censuses, presumably because his parents married shortly after he was born (even though they were both his biological parents).

Now, this birth is slightly after the 1911 census, but Gladys is easily found as living, unmarried, with her parents, her father being a Charles H Baker, a bricklayer. This Charles H Baker is also the only Charles Baker who has died in the Knaresborough district by 1929

I believe you will find Dorothy living with members of this family in 1939.  Presumedly she died before 1991 or someone has had her record opened.

Debra  :)

Yes, thank you! That's definitely her. I'm not sure why I didn't check the 1939 register for her, but that is her birth date and Winchester was her married name. In 1939 she's living with her father's maternal uncle (the son of Charles Holliday Baker and Sarah Smith), assuming her father is indeed the Leslie Baker born in 1911, which at this point it's pretty obvious that he is.

Leslie and Doris may both have been younger than they stated.
Are they on the 1939 register?

No, they're ridiculously elusive. I have a definite birth date for the Leslie Baker born in 1911 (24 Jul), and he's nowhere on the 1939 register, nor is there any Leslie Baker living with a Doris in the area. They did seem to have only one child (Dorothy Baker, born Knaresborough, 1930), so it's possible one or both died before 1939, but I can't find either's death records. There's no indication that Leslie is deceased in his daughter's 1948 marriage, though.

I'm looking for both parties in a marriage. The certificate states this:

Married: 5th April 1927
District: Knaresborough
Groom: Leslie Baker
Groom's age: 22
Condition: Bachelor
Profession: Motor Mechanic
Residence: 97 Valley Drive, Harrogate
Groom's Father: Charles Baker (deceased)
Groom's Father's Profession: Builder

Bride: Doris Maughan, otherwise Taylor
Age: 22
Condition: Spinster
Profession: Waitress
Residence: 25 Burke Street, Harrogate
Father: None stated
Father's Profession: None stated

People Present: Samuel Stanley North and Alan Mais (?)

I have a theory as to the groom's identity. There is no Leslie Baker born in the area in 1906-1908, and no Leslie Baker (without a middle name) in the entire England and Wales census born in those years with a father named Charles. However, there *is* a Leslie Baker born in Harrogate in 1911. This Leslie Baker's certificate names no father, but names his mother as Gladys Baker. The address is 47a Denmark Street, Harrogate.

Now, this birth is slightly after the 1911 census, but Gladys is easily found as living, unmarried, with her parents, her father being a Charles H Baker, a bricklayer. This Charles H Baker is also the only Charles Baker who has died in the Knaresborough district by 1929, when Leslie Baker and Doris Maughan/Taylor were married.

So, to recap, the marriage certificate states Leslie Baker's father, Charles, as deceased in 1929. The only Charles Baker to have died in the region by that date is the maternal grandfather of the *other* Leslie Baker, born a couple of years later. Both Charleses were builders/bricklayers.

So, my theory is that both Leslies are the same person. Out of embarrassment at actually being younger than his bride, he lied about his age to match hers. He doesn't know his real father, but was brought up by his maternal grandfather, whom his mother was certainly living with when he was born.

I just hope I'm not reaching too far with this.

As for his wife, Doris Maughan otherwise Taylor, I'm unable to find who she might be in the 1911 census. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys. I've found Charles in a public tree now, as being born in 1836, Leslie Aberdeenshire, to Alexander Stuart and Helen Cunningham. Mary Josephine is listed as his daughter. However, it seems to have put her as the daughter of what was presumably his first wife (named as Ellen Dargan). Eliza Finnigan is the mother, though, given the marriage date.

Could this be Mary Josephine Stuart's sister?

Marriage after banns:
Church of Roman Central India

19th May 1897
Mhow

Frank Edgar Williams,30,bachelor.PWD inspector. Father:George Williams
Katie Ann Stuart,25,spinster. Father:Charles Stuart. Residence: Mhow

That seems to be her sister and her first marriage, yes. Sadly, the updated spelling (Stuart) and extra name to search doesn't yield any birth records either, though. Family trees with the first husband and sister's spouse leave her parentage black as well.

Possible birth registration:

Mary J Stewart. 50th Foot, Colchester. 1873

British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms. Vol 1211 page 31 line 117

How would I go about accessing that record? I can't find it on Ancestry.com, only on other sites that require subscription. Is it something I can just order from the general register office?
