There is a Neilson Square in Gatehouse, which today is just a couple of cottages on Ann Street.
Neilson Street was nearby but the buildings on it have long gone.

This would most likely be the parish of Kelton, Castle Douglas.

Good luck with your research!

Yes, Crocketford people were buried in Kirkpatrick Durham.

No Allens are listed in KD, however there are several Currie (sometimes Corrie) graves. Who were you looking for particularly?

Bagbie is a small tenant farm on the Kirkdale estate, just outside the village of Carsluith (near Creetown). I can'y imagine a laird living there. There are quarries nearby, one of them is Bagbie quarry.

Steve

I have emailed you photos of Carsons graves but thought you would be interested in the transcripts of inscriptions on 2 adjacent stones.

1)  by Alex Carson in memory of Mary Heuchan (his mother and wife of John Carson} who died in Glen 21.3.1783 aged 53. Also John Carson died Gategill 15.2.1803

2) by Alex Carson of High Auchenlarie died 23.5.1850 aged 82 in memory of wife Helen McLelland d. Auchenlarie 3.6.1810 aged 44.

Perhaps John was William's father and Alex John's brother?

I have found them!  They were buried in Anwoth Old Kirkyard. Anwoth is next parish to Girthon.

The transcription reads

by trustees of the late Mary Carson died 23.12.1869 aged 66 in memory of her father William Carson died 1829 aged 60 and mother Janet Henry died 1836 aged 66.

If William and Janet had died in Girthon they would have probably have been buried in Girthon Old Kirkyard.  I have the transcriptions of the grave stones there but altough there are some Carsons and Henrys I can't find yours. Of course not everyone could afford a grave stone.

Happy hunting  Callywoods

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Willam Holmes
« on: Wednesday 23 March 11 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has come across William Holmes born in Jersey 1790 ish.
He moved to Newcastle upon Tyne before 1824, was probably a ship builder.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have details of his sons who became well known ship builders in Devonport, New Zealand.
